Michelle & Barack Obama
Gilbert Flores for Penske Media

It feels like Michelle and Barack Obama are addressing divorce rumors every week these days. Perhaps it’s got to do with the fact that their marriage was in the spotlight for so long, and that now they’re not really political figures as much as they are celebrities, which invites a lot more scrutiny. There’s also their deadpan humor, and just the fact that when people are interested in a couple, they take every little thing that happens as a sign. Plus, there’s Michelle Obama‘s podcast and the fact that people now have a lot more to dissect about their personal lives than they used to.

Michelle Obama opened up about sharing so much of her personal life on IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson during an interview with Parents magazine and got really candid about her decision and parenthood.

“It’s so easy for us to curl up into this protective instinct and not talk about the messy or more complicated bits of our lives,” she said. “It can feel dangerous to expose those imperfect parts of ourselves. But over the years, I have learned that it’s really the opposite.”

She especially talked about parenting her daughters when her husband was the President of the United States, and how complicated that was at times. “Barack and I did everything we could to give our girls as normal of a life as possible.”

“When we were at the White House, we made sure they were doing things like making their beds every morning and as they got older, getting summer jobs. Once we left the White House, their lives slowly began to inch a little closer toward normalcy,” she added. “But the truth is, their circumstances have been extraordinary in so many ways—and that forced them to learn critical skills like discipline, flexibility, and determination to go after what they really wanted. And now here we are.”

Here is a place where their daughters, who are still “under more scrutiny than others their age,” have ” learned to roll with the punches.” And though parents will always worry, “I’m always so impressed by how they handle it—with grace, resolve, and charm. These days, more than anything, I can’t wait to see how they surprise us next,” Obama also shared.

The interview comes after Michelle and Barack Obama put divorce rumors to rest during an episode of her podcast. To Robinson’s remark that it was nice to have them both in the same room, Michelle Obama replied, “When we aren’t, folks think we’re divorced.” Said like the mere notion was absurd.

But later, the two shared a more emotional moment, with the former first lady saying about their relationship, “There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I’ve thought about quitting my man, and we’ve had some really hard times. We’ve had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures, and I have become a better person because of the man I’m married to.”

“Don’t let me start tearing up now,” was the former President’s response.

So yes, still together and going strong.
