King Charles has a lot on his plate. He’s continued with a full schedule despite his illness, and there are recent reports that he might be putting his feud with his youngest son, Prince Harry, to rest. But on top of that, he also has the upcoming visit of US President Donald Trump. He recently hosted French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife. When you’re King, things never stop.

Recent reports indicate that this upcoming visit by Trump even has the King worried. The Daily Beast is reporting the King is “very concerned” that the President could go on about immigration during his state visit in September.  The outlet also reported that there are concerns the President could go against protocol and bring up politics while making his traditional speech at his state banquet.

This comes after President Trump said, “You better get your act together or you’re not going to have Europe anymore. You’ve got to stop this horrible invasion that is happening to Europe, many countries in Europe,” during his stay in Scotland. He also added, “Some leaders have not let it happen, and they’re not getting the proper credit,” even suggesting he had a list. “I could name them to you right now, but I’m not going to embarrass the other ones. But stop, this immigration is killing Europe.”

Reports indicate the King had already been worried about Trump’s rhetoric on Canada, a country with deep ties to the UK that has King Charles as the official head of state. Now, a friend of King Charles told the outlet that, “Charles has spent his entire life promoting tolerance and compassion. He will be appalled by what Trump said on Friday, which seems to be entirely driven by his domestic agenda, and will be very concerned about the possibility of a repeat of Trump’s outburst in September.”

The outlet also had a civil servant confirm that foreign visitors meeting the king are advised that he should remain apolitical, so as to avoid situations and speeches like the ones Trump just made in Scotland. “The trouble with Trump is, he doesn’t feel bound by the rules,” this person told The Daily Beast. He also shared that precautions are being taken to try to avoid Trump having the opportunity to put the King in an awkward position.

“Parliament is not sitting, so he won’t be making an inflammatory speech to MPs.” He added. “But, of course, he will make a speech and propose toasts at the banquet in his honor. Usually, these speeches are ceremonial diplomacy of the highest order and honor the relationship between the two nations. The one group of people Trump seems to respect is the British royal family, so we will just have to hope for the best.”

How could King Charles react if President Trump started talking about immigration in a setting that places the King in an uncomfortable position? “If Trump starts sounding off about the evils of immigration to the cameras while the king is standing next to him, the king would find that hard to take,” the friend added.

Originally, King Charles had invited the President for an informal visit. But Trump insisted on a state visit. “It’s embarrassing for the palace, which sent the letter suggesting that there was going to be this cozy, informal visit first, but it looks like Trump saw that for what it was: an attempt to kick the can down the road. Given the general anxiety around the king’s health, you can understand where Trump is coming from,” a former courtier told The Daily Beast.

What will transpire during the upcoming state visit, to take place in September, remains to be seen. But King Charles is hoping it will not make any headlines.
