US President Donald Trump is in the UK, and if there’s one thing he always has, is a lot of opinions. The President is expected to go back to the UK for a formal state visit with King Charles in September, but for now, he hosted a press conference with Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland. And during it, he had a lot of good things to say about the Royal Family, including the King. But there was one particular comment people are interpreting as a dig at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
“Being with Charles, Camilla and everybody, I’ve got to know because of four years [as President] and now six months,” President Trump said. “I’ve got to know a lot of the family members. They are great people. They are really great people.” So far, so good. But then he added.

“And in that sense, I think the UK is very lucky. You could have people that weren’t great people. I don’t know if I can say that, but you could have people that weren’t.”
For most people, it was obvious who he was likely referring to. Social media even had users saying things like, “I love the shade President Trump throws at Prince Harry & Meghan Markle.”
President Trump’s comment comes after Prince Harry appeared to make a dig at Trump during the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games back in February, as he talked about “weak moral character in the world.” His wife, Meghan Markle, went even further in her criticism.
During a 2016 appearance on Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Markle referred to Trump as “divisive” and branded him “misogynistic” during a 2016 appearance on Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. Trump’s response was to call her “nasty.”
Recent reports indicate King Charles is worried about the upcoming visit. The Daily Beast reported the King is “very concerned” that the President could go on about immigration during his state visit in September.
Trump’s recent comments about the matter during his time in Scotland were: “You better get your act together or you’re not going to have Europe anymore. You’ve got to stop this horrible invasion that is happening to Europe, many countries in Europe,” adding, “This immigration is killing Europe.”
According to a source close to the King, “Charles has spent his entire life promoting tolerance and compassion. He will be appalled by what Trump said on Friday, which seems to be entirely driven by his domestic agenda, and will be very concerned about the possibility of a repeat of Trump’s outburst in September.”
Precautions are reportedly being taken to avoid this, a civil servant confirmed to the outlet. “Parliament is not sitting, so he won’t be making an inflammatory speech to MPs. But, of course, he will make a speech and propose toasts at the banquet in his honor. Usually, these speeches are ceremonial diplomacy of the highest order and honor the relationship between the two nations. The one group of people Trump seems to respect is the British royal family, so we will just have to hope for the best.”
