Morning television programs are, in so many ways, the ultimate comfort shows. We turn on the TV and expect to see the same people, talking us through interesting, exciting, or strange things that just happened or that will happen. For some, shows like Good Morning America are the official start to their day. So, when there’s a change or a familiar face is missing, everyone notices.
Robin Roberts has been missing from the lineup of Good Morning America in the past few days, leading people to wonder: Where is Robin Roberts on Good Morning America? Is she gone for good? And if not, when is she expected back? We’ve got the answer.

Roberts is on a break, but there’s no reason for concern. She’ll be back! In fact, she announced her break on air, during the July 24episode. And the reason for her break is kind of adorable, if we’re going to be honest. Roberts is taking time off with her wife, Amber Laign. The couple just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary.
“Twenty years … and counting,” Roberts said in a July 28 Instagram video. “So, we’re going away. We’re going abroad, and we’re going [to] a place that many have on their bucket list.”
It’s not a romantic escapade, though. Instead, the two are on a volunteer trip to Kigali, Rwanda. A couple that volunteers together, stays together. “We’re in #Rwanda as guests of @inmuwetrust_ & @giantsofafrica celebrating young basketball players across Africa. Every last Saturday in the month in Rwanda is a national day of service!!👏🏽Wonderful way for the two of us to celebrate 20 years as a couple…it certainly has been an adventure! 💕” Roberts shared on Instagram.
Her wife, Laign, also shared a snap of their time in Rwanda, and a sweet message about their marriage. “20 Years, 20 Countries, One Incredible Journey ❤️🌍Robin and I celebrated our 20-year anniversary in a way we’ll never forget — in Rwanda, with Giants of Africa, surrounded by the energy, joy, and spirit of youth from 20 African countries. ✨,” she said. “From dancing to community service that touched our hearts, this experience reminded us what truly matters: connection, purpose, and giving back.”
Part of the reason GMA looked so different is that, on top of Robert’s short break, George Stephanopoulos was also on vacation. ESPN’s Joe Buck filled in for Stephanopoulos, while Rebecca Jarvis did the same for Robins. There’s no set date for Robins’ return, though multiple outlets report she’s expected back the first full week of August, which begins on August 4.
ABC News recently grouped its overnight programming and GMA3 with Good Morning America as a cost-saving measure. This meant DeMarco Morgan and Eva Pilgrim both left GMA3, with Pilgrim moving to Inside Edition. With all these recent changes, it makes sense that people were worried about Roberts’ absence, but thankfully, she’ll soon be back to where we’re used to seeing her, and all will be right with our mornings.
