Prince William and Kate Middleton are preparing for William to be King. That would have been true even without King Charles’s illness, but there’s no doubt his cancer has made everything feel a little more urgent. And among the things that will change when William is King is Kate Middleton’s role, and that of the people around her. Including her sister, Pippa Middleton.
As it stands, with Kate Middleton’s cancer and preparations taking place behind the scenes for an eventual succession, which means stepping in for King Charles and Queen Camilla more often, Pippa Middleton has already been taking on more responsibilities that her sister usually had. But what does that mean for her future once her sister is Queen?

Though Middleton isn’t a royal, and therefore cannot be given an official royal role, she’s still stepping up in ways her sister will certainly be proud of. One of those is building a children’s nursery.
According to the Daily Mail, Pippa and her husband, James Matthews, were given permission by their local council to establish a nursery at Bucklebury Farm. The couple purchased the property five years ago and operate it as a recreational estate. They also live nearby.
The space is expected to be for kids between the ages of nine months and five years old, providing “strong social benefits” and meeting a local shortage of “early years places.”
Pippa’s endeavor is in line with one of Kate Middleton’s most beloved causes: children. The Princess has made children’s issues a key focus of her work as a royal, recently launching the “Shaping Us” campaign as an offshoot of The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood that she established in 2021. She also recently backed a series of animated videos released through the Centre for Early Childhood’s YouTube.
Kate and Pippa have been known to be close, which is no surprise that she would take an interest in something that supports her sister’s goals as a royal. And though recently, there have been reports that the two sisters have grown apart, there has been pushback to that narrative, as well.
“There has been no falling out between Kate and Pippa,” one royal insider said. “I don’t think that would ever happen. Of course, there are sometimes issues between sisters, but they have always had each other’s backs.”
According to the source, the two have “simply grown slightly apart” as it’s normal since they’re both busy moms. “Pippa and her husband are incredibly well-off and enjoy a private country life, whereas Kate is preparing her children to be the public faces of the monarchy. It’s chalk and cheese. I’m sure they still spend time together behind closed doors, but for now, it seems Pippa has no interest in stepping back into the spotlight alongside Kate.”
Things, however, might change when Kate is Queen and needs someone she can fully trust to have her back and make sure the things she holds dear to her heart get done. Who better than your sister, after all?
