The news about the passing of Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband, has been quite a shock. Blackstock died of melanoma on August 7, and reports indicate that despite their contentious divorce, Clarkson stood by Blackstone’s private battle with cancer all the way up until his death. The two shared two children, River, 11, and Remington, 9.
However, Blackstock had moved on from Clarkson, just as she had moved on from him. That much was clear from his obituary, where there was no mention of the singer. Instead, the obituary mentioned his partner at the time of his death, saying, “Brandon, along with his beautiful and loving partner in life and business, Brittney Marie Jones, started building a life, building companies, and working tirelessly to create Headwaters Livestock Auction and what will live on as his legacy, The Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana.”

But who is Brittney Marie Jones? According to Page Six she was an assistant to Kelly Clarkson from December 2016 to December 2018. She was also an assistant to Blackstone during that same time. Her employment was terminated in early 2020, around the same time Kelly Clarkson filed for divorce.
The obituary also mentioned Blackstock’s children, the two youngest he shared with Clarkson. “But never did his star shine brighter than in his role as a father. Nothing mattered to Brandon more than his four beautiful children, Savannah, Seth, River, and Remy. To say he was devoted seems cliché. It feels like an overused word, but it is the correct word. He was a devoted father. His four children were and will always be his greatest love and his greatest legacy.”
Despite their past issues, including a legal battle over their Montana ranch and Clarkson suing Blackstock, claiming unlawfully procured business deals for her as her talent manager, a source told People that Kelly Clarkson was supportive during her ex’s private battle. “When she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake,” the source said. “Kelly has always tried to keep things classy. It became clear earlier this year that Brandon was not doing well. She’s been devastated for the kids.”
Clarkson has not made any public comment about Blackstock’s passing, but she did step away from The Kelly Clarkson Show, and announced she was postponing her Las Vegas residence the day before his passing. “Unfortunately, I need to postpone the remainder of the August Studio Session dates in Las Vegas,” she wrote on an Instagram post at the time. “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them. I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding.”
It has all reportedly taken a toll. “It’s been exhausting and so sad… ” a source told Page Six. “Kelly has been working so hard, as well as looking after Brandon. Despite their difficult divorce, he’s still the man she loved and still her kids’ father.”
