Jeff Bezos‘ mother, Jackie, died in Miami on Aug. 14 in Miami, weeks after his wedding to Lauren Sánchez. She was 78.
Jackie was one of Amazon’s first investors when she and her husband, Miguel, gave their son $245,000 for the then-book e-commerce site in 1995. She was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in 2020, the Bezos Family Foundation said in a statement. However, no cause of death has been revealed.
She was raised in Albuquerque, where she had her first child, Jeff, at 17. She married her second husband, Miguel, in 1978, after she divorced her first husband, Theodore John Jorgensen Jr, who was Jeff’s father. Miguel adopted Jeff soon after they married.

“Her adulthood started a little bit early when she became my mom at the tender age of 17,” the Amazon founder wrote in a tribute on social media. “That couldn’t have been easy, but she made it all work. She pounced on the job of loving me with ferocity, brought my amazing dad onto the team a few years later, and then added my sister and brother to her list of people to love, guard, and nourish. For the rest of her life, that list of people to love never stopped growing. She always gave so much more than she ever asked for.”
The news comes weeks after Jeff Bezos married Lauren Sánchez in Venice, Italy. His wife commented under his post, “We will miss her SO much. Love you.”
Earlier in the week, reports emerged that Jeff and Lauren are still in a contentious legal battle with the former journalist’s brother, Michael Sánchez. According to Page Six, the newlywed couple is currently demanding $182,374 in attorney’s fees and $8,182 in legal costs, “incurred in connection with (1) her successful Special Motion to Strike, and (2) this Motion for Attorney’s Fees and Costs.” The motion says that the fees stemming from their Anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) cases in response to Michael filing what their side called “frivolous” claims, which he knew or should have known were dead on arrival.”
The feud between Jeff, Lauren, and Michael culminated when news broke of the Amazon founder and the former journalist’s relationship in 2018. Lauren was still married, but separated from her husband at the time. Michael denied leaking photos that were under the belt to The National Enquirer. In February 2020, Michael sued the couple for defamation. Later in the year, os Angeles County Superior Court ruled in favor of Jeff.
Lauren’s lawyers described the battle as a “multi-year campaign of harassment in the hope he could extract a wholly undeserved financial settlement.” In a statement, Michael described the couple as “liars and cheaters,” and called the justice system “corrupt.”
Lauren also posted an emotional post about her son Evan leaving for college a couple of days before her mother-in-law’s death. Dropped off Evan at college today. 18 years of early mornings, late night snacks and family dinners…. and then there he was building his own dorm cabinet,” she captioned her post on Instagram stories. “A small thing but in that moment I saw the start of his next chapter. Proud. Heartbroken. Grateful”
