The US and the British have always been allies, so it makes sense that the British royal family and the US President, whoever it is, have always gotten along. King Charles hasn’t been the monarch for long, but he has gotten along with President Donald Trump very well in both his Presidencies, and that extends to First Lady Melania Trump as well.
In her memoir, Melania, the first lady, recounted visiting London when Queen Elizabeth’s reign and how President Trump kept in touch with King Charles. Melania wrote: “As we bid farewell to Her Majesty, we extended a cordial invitation for her return visit to the United States. She expressed her gratitude with a warm smile. Sadly, Her Majesty wasn’t able to visit with us again before her death in 2022, but our friendship with the Royal Family continues, and we exchange letters with King Charles to this day.”

According to Hello!, the first lady explained she has written to the King, stating, “We kept in touch through letters, exchanging thoughts and ideas regularly.” The two reportedly share interests like “architecture, gardens, and the arts.”
In the memoir, Melania Trump also shared that she and the King, who was then the Prince of Wales, discussed the environment during the banquet hosted in honor of the U.S. state visit. “Our paths had crossed many years ago in New York City. This time we engaged in an interesting conversation about his deep-rooted commitment to environmental conservation.” She went on to add that she and President Trump hosted the King in 2019.
“Donald and I hosted an intimate dinner in honor of Prince Charles and the Duchess at the US ambassador’s residence—a perfect expression of the enduring ties between our nations.”
She also added, “Despite the tumultuous backdrop of British politics at the time surrounding Brexit and changes at the Prime Minister’s office, the Queen and her family extended a warm welcome to us, treating us with the utmost hospitality.”
All of these nice tidbits from the first lady’s book come after reports indicate King Charles is worried about the upcoming visit. The Daily Beast reported the King is “very concerned” that the President could go on about immigration during his state visit sept for September.
Trump recently spoke about immigration while in Scotland, saying, “You better get your act together or you’re not going to have Europe anymore,” adding, “This immigration is killing Europe.”
According to a source close to the King, “Charles has spent his entire life promoting tolerance and compassion. He will be appalled by what Trump said, which seems to be entirely driven by his domestic agenda, and will be very concerned about the possibility of a repeat of Trump’s outburst in September.”
A civil servant reported to the outlet that precautions are being taken to avoid a repeat. “Parliament is not sitting, so he won’t be making an inflammatory speech to MPs. But, of course, he will make a speech and propose toasts at the banquet in his honor. Usually, these speeches are ceremonial diplomacy of the highest order and honor the relationship between the two nations. The one group of people Trump seems to respect is the British royal family, so we will just have to hope for the best.”
