The relationship between King Charles and Prince Harry hasn’t been all that great for years. In fact, in a BBC interview earlier this year, Prince Harry revealed the two weren’t on speaking terms, but said, “I would love reconciliation with my family,” adding that, “There’s no point continuing to fight anymore. Life is precious.” And now, Prince Harry has taken another big step towards making that reconciliation not just possible, but making sure it happens soon.
Not so long ago, senior aides from King Charles and Prince Harry met in what was thought to be the first step towards reconciliation. Now, according to The New York Post, Prince Harry enlisted the help of a friend to pay tribute to VJ Day heroes, including his late grandfather, Prince Philip, placing a letter and a wreath at the Burma Star Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, England.

According to the outlet, Prince Harry specifically asked that the wreath be laid only after King Charles and Queen Camilla exited the remembrance service, presumably to not take attention away from them. The letter, which was addressed to the “Forgotten Army,” specifically mentioned Prince Phillip.
“For me, this anniversary carries an added layer of meaning,” Prince Harry said in the letter, according to GB News. “My late grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, served in the Pacific campaign. He spoke with quiet humility about those years, but I know how deeply he respected all who stood beside him in that theatre of war. Today, as I think of him, I think also of each of you, of the shared hardships, the bonds forged, and the legacy you leave.”
The letter also says, “Today, as both our nations mark this anniversary, we acknowledge the respect earned, the lives lost and the enduring friendship that has since taken root.” Prince Harry finishes the letter with, “I am humbled by your example, proud of your service and dedication, and profoundly grateful for what you endured. Your story is part of our shared heritage, and it must never be forgotten. With the deepest respect, thank you.”
The youngest son of King Charles was known to be very close to his grandfather before his death. The King was also very close to his father.
During the service, an emotional moment saw a veteran going off-script to salute King Charles in remarks that were broadcast live on the BBC. 105-year-old Captain Yavar Abbas addressed the King, who was seated beside Queen Camilla. “I make no apology for briefly going off script to salute my brave king, who is here with his beloved queen, despite the fact that he is under treatment for cancer,” he said.
Queen Camilla was seen getting visibly emotional, her eyes filled with tears, as the man spoke about the King’s cancer. Charles was also visibly touched as Abbas spoke. “And if it provides any comfort, I’ve been rid of it for the past 25 years and counting,” he added, as the crowd cheered. Whether the reminder of the connection both shared to Prince Philip will make the reconciliation happen sooner rather than later remains to be seen, but it feels like a good sign for King Charles and Prince Harry.
