Prince William and Prince Harry carry a lot of their mother with them; that much is clear. And they each do that in their own very special way. Now, her former private secretary is speaking out about the influence she still has on her son’s life choices. Patrick Jephson discussed the messages the late Princess left her sons with People, and the way she is still with them.
“If they study Princess Diana’s life carefully—and I hope they often do — William, Harry and their advisers will know that she left them many good examples to follow and also a few important warnings to heed. Public affection and the rich rewards of royalty must be earned with self-sacrifice and service,” he said.

Not just that, he also added, “I’m sure they are grateful that every day she can still guide, comfort and inspire them along the difficult path they were born to follow.”
Princess Diana might still be guiding them, but at this point, she’s doing so separately as the two brothers are reportedly not on speaking terms. Despite that, Prince Harry has been open about seeking reconciliation. On a BCC interview earlier this year, he said, “I would love reconciliation with my family,” adding that, “There’s no point continuing to fight anymore. Life is precious.”
Senior aides of Harry have met with senior aides of King Charles, and the two are reportedly on a path towards reconciliation. The same, however, has not been said of the brothers. Some have reported that the problem for William is Meghan Markle, but that’s very much just speculation by royal experts and observers.
People, however, recently reported that William and Harry are “on separate paths” with zero communication. “The rift is very profound and very long-lasting,” Robert Lacey, author of Battle of Brothers, said to the outlet. “It will not be changed, in my opinion, until Harry makes a move and apologizes.”
The light at the end of the tunnel, however, was provided by a recent report to Parade, which suggested concerns about King Charles’ health might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for the two dueling brothers. It makes sense, too. William and Harry were incredibly close when they lost their mother, and if something were to bring them back together, it might be the fear of losing their father.
“King Charles really isn’t doing well,” the insider said about the King, explaining that his health has been “deteriorating more,” something that lines up with recent reports. “It wouldn’t be surprising if William and Harry reconnected a bit more over this,” the source concluded. “This could be the thing that pushes it to happen.”
If there’s one thing we know for sure about Princess Diana, it is that she wouldn’t want her kids to be fighting. That’s probably one thing she and King Charles agree on. So, if the memory of Princess Diana or King Charles’ illness or both can bring them together, it’ll probably be a good thing, either way.
