US President Donald Trump is visiting the U.K. soon, with the president set for an unprecedented second state visit to the country in mid-September. And the visit is set to include a state banquet hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla, the kind of reception one would expect of a foreign President being received by royalty. And now, President Trump has taken it upon himself to invite one particular person to that banquet.

According to The Telegraph, Trump has extended an invitation to Dame Karen Pierce, the former British Ambassador to the US, to attend the banquet at Windsor Castle. Pierce, a highly respected diplomat, served as the ambassador to the US from 2020 to February 2025, and previously worked as the UK’s permanent representative to the United Nations. Lord Peter Mandelson, the current British ambassador to the US, is also expected to attend.

Mandelson criticized Trump harshly in the past, calling him a “danger to the world” and “little short of a white nationalist,” but seemed to take it all back once Trump won re-election.

“I consider my remarks about President Trump as ill-judged and wrong,” he told Fox News in January. “I think that times and attitudes toward the president have changed since then.” Mandelson also added, “I think that he has won fresh respect. He certainly has from me, and that is going to be the basis of all the work I do as his majesty’s ambassador in the United States.”

There are no reports about how King Charles feels about the US President adding to the state banquet guest list. Trump has previously spoken favorably of the British royal family, saying, “Being with Charles, Camilla and everybody, I’ve got to know because of four years [as President] and now six months,” he said. “I’ve got to know a lot of the family members. They are great people. They are really great people.”

Unlike his French counterpart, who addressed Parliament during his recent U.K. visit, Trump will not be doing so. This, according to reports, is part of the plan. “Parliament is not sitting, so he won’t be making an inflammatory speech to MPs. But, of course, he will make a speech and propose toasts at the banquet in his honor. Usually, these speeches are ceremonial diplomacy of the highest order and honor the relationship between the two nations. The one group of people Trump seems to respect is the British royal family, so we will just have to hope for the best.”

King Charles is reportedly worried about the upcoming visit. The Daily Beast reported the King is “very concerned” that President Trump could use the moment to discuss immigration. During a recent visit to Scotland, Trump said, “You better get your act together or you’re not going to have Europe anymore. You’ve got to stop this horrible invasion that is happening to Europe, many countries in Europe,” and added, “This immigration is killing Europe.”

Brittani Barger, co-founder of Royal News, told Daily Express U.S.: “If King Charles is concerned President Trump will speak out of turn, he has good reason to think that,” adding, “President Trump does not hide his feelings or opinions, no matter who is around. And that is one reason so many people love him, but so many also dislike him.”

However, she also said about the royal family, “They know their responsibilities and even if they disagree with a person, they will show grace and do what is best for the UK,” explaining, “If this state visit is going to help the UK, it is worth the time of King Charles and Queen Camilla.”

We’ll have to wait and see what happens during the President’s visit, but one thing seems clear: President Trump won’t have a hostile crowd.
