Travis Kelce is happy to have Taylor Swift as his fiancee. The NFL star opened up for the first time about how he felt after proposing to the “Lover” singer.

On the Sept. 3 episode of New Heights with his brother Jason Kelce, Travis revealed that the proposal wasn’t what he initially hoped. “I once thought I would do it on water,” he said. The Super Bowl champion also revealed the advice he’d give on when to actually pop the question. “Man, you’ve gotta know your gal. You’ve gotta know your gal or your significant other. You’ve gotta know them,” he shared. “You can’t let how somebody else does it make you feel like you need to do it that way.”

He continued, “I would just say know your partner, know who you’re doing it for and do it for the right reasons and everything else will be beautiful.”

When did Travis Kelce propose to Taylor Swift?

A source told Page Six that Travis asked Taylor to marry him right after they recorded their episode of New Heights together. The insider revealed that Travis chose that particular date since she would already be glammed up for the episode.

“He knew that he wanted to marry her. [The date] was just a matter of when the timing was right,” the source said. “It was less about the significance of the time and [more about] when he could actually do it in between her tour and his season.”

The couple reportedly kept it under wraps for weeks and close within family members. “He got her out there, they were about to go out to dinner, and he said, ‘Let’s go out and have a glass of wine,’ … They got out there, and that’s when he asked her, and it was beautiful,” his father Ed told ABC News 5 Cleveland.

The power couple posted the engagement news weeks later in a collaborative Instagram post. “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” they wrote. In the photos, Travis pops the question in a lavish garden, and several photos include the “Love Story” singer posing with the gorgeous ring on her finger. Taylor went all out for the occasion, wearing a striped silk Polo Ralph Lauren dress, her diamond-studded Cartier Santos Demoiselle watch, and her “TNT” friendship bracelet by Wove, which was gifted by Travis during Christmastime.

While an official date hasn’t been announced for the couple’s private wedding, a source dished that the wedding planning stages aren’t even a thing yet. “Taylor and Travis have been in celebration mode ever since the engagement,” an insider told People. “They are not in the wedding planning phase yet. Right now, they just want to enjoy being engaged and they are going to take their time with it.”
