Kate Middleton and Melania Trump don’t really seem like they have all that much in common. And yet, the two seemed to have found a middle ground enough to go through a joint engagement during the first lady’s state visit alongside US President Donald Trump. But what does that say about their relationship? Is there one?
Well, at least it seems like there’s enough of one for the Princess of Wales to share some personal anecdotes. Kate and Melania’s joint appearance, which saw the women accompany young members of the Squirrels, a UK scouting group, for nature and craft activities, came with some casual conversation. This is diplomacy at its best, after all. Sometimes it requires a little casual.

As Middleton shared with the first lady, Prince Louis, who is seven, is now obsessed with chestnuts. “We keep finding conkers in cupboards, in his bed—conkers everywhere!” Middleton shared. The young prince has also been revealed to be interested in rugby and music.
Chief Scout Dwayne Fields spoke about the joint appearance with People. “The Princess of Wales is absolutely incredible with our young people. I’ve seen her work with them before — she interacts very personably, she loves to exchange stories and she loves to talk to them and hear the same,” he said, adding that “Melania was very similar. She was engaging, she asked lots of questions and the young people were willing to talk to her.”
But perhaps the most interesting thing was what Fields shared about the way the two women interacted, sharing that their interaction was “amazingly warm” and they seemed to get on well. “They gave so much of themselves. It is easy for the young people to be overwhelmed, but they were settled and calm and enjoyed the day,” he said.
Confirmation that the meeting went well comes after a little controversy occurred. First lady Melania Trump was accused of curtsying toward King Charles and Queen Camilla when she and President Trump first met them. The President, similarly, didn’t bow. Both the President and the first lady had backlash back in 2018 when they also did not curtsy to Queen Elizabeth.
Back then, social media, for example, one X user claimed they had “no class.” However, the second time around, people are noting that there’s actually no official rule about curtsying or bowing when meeting members of the British royal family.
“There are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms,” the royal family’s official website states. “For men this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy. Other people prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way.”
Clearly, King Charles and Queen Camilla weren’t offended by the lack of curtsy from Melania Trump, and she and Kate Middleton went on to prove that they get along pretty well in subsequent events together. All in all, the British royal family will probably call this visit a win, as they avoided anything controversial being said, and the entire time everyone focused on improving diplomatic relationships, despite previous concerns.
