And things between Queen Camilla and the rest of the family, particularly her stepsons, seemed to be as good as they could be recently. That is, of course, until recent reports about William and Harry’s nicknames for her resurfaced. And now, there are allegations that she also doesn’t really get along with Kate Middleton.
It reportedly all got worse after the recent state visit from US President Donald Trump, after sources said Middleton shone brighter than Queen Camilla. “The tension was impossible to ignore,” an insider told Closer. “Every gesture and every colour choice felt like a power move. It was Kate who drew the attention, and that didn’t go down well with Camilla. From the moment Kate arrived, she proved herself to be the real power player.”

“She completely outshone Camilla and everyone noticed it. There were moans and groans behind the scenes at how well Kate was doing, because everyone knew it would go down like a lead balloon at the debrief afterwards. Kate showed who the real star of the show is, and it was impossible not to notice the contrast.”
This reportedly came after Queen Camilla dismissed Middleton after she personally escorted first lady Melania Trump to greet her when the President and first lady first arrived. “It was subtle, but Kate felt sidelined,” the source explained. “She’s worked hard to position herself as the monarchy’s future, and being asked to literally move aside was humiliating. She won’t have it going forward.”
But Middleton was certainly the center of attention during the state dinner, with reports indicating President Trump, who called her “beautiful” when he met her, spoke mostly to her.
Recent reports have indicated that Queen Camilla fears being pushed to the sidelines due to Kate’s popularity. This is particularly true now that Middleton is back to taking on more engagements after her cancer. “Suddenly, Kate’s returned presence is feeling very “queenly”. Palace staff are now managing a delicate balance, encouraging Kate to pace herself so as not to overshadow Camilla,” the source also said.
Us Weekly last year reported on Kate and Camilla’s secret “tense relationship,” with the outlet saying that Camilla has been vocal behind closed doors that Charles should be king for as long as he can. “She loves her responsibilities,” the insider explained. “Her whole life, she has always wanted to be queen, so she doesn’t want to let it go so fast.”
Power and the Palace author Valentine Low told GB News in September 2025 that Camilla’s personality is “completely different” from Kate’s. “Kate is a completely different person to Camilla. She’s very controlled and cautious, and careful,” he said. “Camilla is much more outgoing. She says what she thinks, she’s incredibly engaging, Camilla, and funny. That’s not to say Kate can’t be funny in private, but you know, it’s much more obviously the case with Camilla.”
Explains why the two don’t get along so well. And according to Closer, it will all come back to Kate anyway. “Kate is no longer just supporting the future king, she is shaping him. Every time she steps out in public, the cameras love her. Camilla may have the crown, but it’s Kate who has the country’s heart.
