We keep going back to the same question with Barack Obama and Michelle Obama: How is their marriage going? This has been a constant query since the two first left the White House, and the fact that they’re a little out of the public eye these days, but still famous enough that people are interested, means it’s a question that continues to be asked over and over.
Considering their latest getaway, it’s clear things are just fine. The two were recently spotted enjoying a rare yacht weekend together in Italy, according to Page Six. The former President and first lady were photographed aboard Steven Spielberg’s yacht, which was docked off the coast of Portofino. And though they’ve denied divorce rumors many times before, this might be the thing that convinces some people. You don’t go on romantic getaways if you’re having marriage trouble, do you?

Just recently, divorce rumors started up again, thanks to what seems to be a harmless joke from the former President. Barack Obama spoke about his marriage while at a Jefferson Educational Society event in Erie, Pennsylvania, joking, “I have spent over eight years now trying to dig myself out of a hole with Michelle,” Obama joked. “And that’s been challenging, but I feel like I’m making progress. I’m almost breaking even at the moment.”
They addressed it with jokes the first time, too, on the podcast Michelle Obama co-hosts with her brother, titled IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson. “Welcome to IMO, look at you,” Michelle said to her husband on the latest episode he featured in, to which her brother joked, “Wait, you guys like each other?” The joke went on. “Oh yeah, really, huh. That’s the rumor mill,” she said, adding, “It’s my husband, y’all.”
“She took me back!” Barack Obama joked back. “Now don’t start,” Michelle replied. “It was touch and go for a while,” he said, laughing. Later in the conversation, Michelle Obama even went on to say that “When we aren’t [in the same room] folks think we’re divorced.”
Michelle Obama also addressed the rumors during NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin, explaining why neither she nor her husband was usually on social media. “It’s like, OK, so we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives,” she said. “We are 60. We’re 60, y’all. We just, you just are not gonna know what we’re doing every minute of the day, you know?”
The rumors started after the former first lady skipped Donald Trump’s inauguration, something she also addressed on her podcast, “My decision to skip the inauguration, what people don’t realize, or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me, were met with such ridicule and criticism,” she explained. “People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason, that they had to assume that my marriage was falling apart, you know.”
But no, the marriage is perfectly fine. In fact, the marriage might be ever than ever. And now they’re getting to enjoy it.
