If it feels like Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are having to answer divorce rumors once a week, or once a day, it’s because they basically are doing just that. In a way, that’s just the way with celebrities. You’d think former Presidents and first ladies are not celebrities, but once the politics end, what else are they? So, perhaps we should not be surprised that people have so many questions about the Obamas and their marriage.

But at some point, one would think they’d stop asking questions when the answer continues to be that they’re doing fine and well. But perhaps part of the reason people keep wondering is the way the question keeps being answered, particularly by former President Barack Obama. In the latest issue of make this sound worse than it is, Obama said, “I was digging myself out of the hole I found myself [in] with Michelle,” according to the Daily Mail. “Now I’m at about level ground.”

Now, it’s impossible to know how much of that is his typical deadpan humor and how much of that is truth, but we should probably take it with a grain of salt considering how many times he’s made similar comments recently. He spoke about his marriage while at a Jefferson Educational Society event in Erie, Pennsylvania not long ago, saying, “I have spent over eight years now trying to dig myself out of a hole with Michelle,” adding, “And that’s been challenging, but I feel like I’m making progress. I’m almost breaking even at the moment.”

Of course, just a few days later, the two were happily spending the weekend at a yacht with Steven Spielberg. So, marriage troubles shot down.

The pair also joked about it when the former President showed up on the podcast Michelle Obama co-hosts with her brother, titled IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson. “Wait, you guys like each other?” her brother joked, and the joke went on. “She took me back!” the former President got in on the action.

“Now don’t start,” Michelle Obama replied. “It was touch and go for a while,” he said, laughing. Later in the conversation, Michelle Obama added that, “When we aren’t [in the same room] folks think we’re divorced.”

She has also spoken about the relationship in another podcast, NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin, explaining the lack of social media updates from the two. “It’s like, OK, so we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives,” she said. “We are 60. We’re 60, y’all. We just, you just are not gonna know what we’re doing every minute of the day, you know?”

Rumors about problems in the relationship really picked up after Michelle Obama skipped Donald Trump’s inauguration, something she discussed on her podcast, “My decision to skip the inauguration, what people don’t realize, or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me, were met with such ridicule and criticism,” she explained. “People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason, that they had to assume that my marriage was falling apart, you know.”

Just like all the other times we’ve discussed this, the marriage is fine. They just like joking about it.
