After news of her sudden split from Ketih Urban, we’re taking a look back at Nicole Kidman‘s relationship with Tom Cruise. It seems like there are some similiarties in both of the actress’ breakups.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman met on the set of the film Days of Thunder in 1989 and later married in December 1990 during a private ceremony held on Christmas Eve. They collaborated on films like Ron Howard’s Far and Away and Stanley Kubrick’s last film Eyes Wide Shut. The couple shares two adopted children, Isabella Jane, born in 1992, and Connor Antony, born in 1995.
However, the marriage ended after a decade, with Tom Cruise filing for divorce in 2001.

Tom Cruise cited irreconcilable differences in his divorce from Nicole Kidman. In 2001, their rep told multiple outlets in a statement, “Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers, which constantly keep them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seems best for both of them at this time.”
However, for the Baby Girl actress, it was a complete blindside. “That was a major shock,” she said in a 2006 June issue of Ladies’ Home Journal. “He was huge; still is. To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me. And I loved him. I still love him,” she told the magazine.
She continued, “I knew I was going to get hit with something. But I think a divorce, and the demise of what your family is, is a little death in itself.”
To this day, Tom Cruise keeps mum about his relationship with his ex-wife. “She knows why, and I know why,” he told Vanity Fair in October 2001 about the reasoning of their divorce. “She’s the mother of my children, and I wish her well. I think that you just move on. And I don’t say that lightly. I don’t say that with anything. Things happen in life, and you do everything you can, and in every possible way, and there’s a point at which you just sometimes have to face the brutal reality.”
Five years after her divorce from Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman married Keith Urban. Together, they have two kids, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.
The exact reasoning behind Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s breakup hasn’t been revealed. However, it didn’t seem like it was a mutual split. “She didn’t want this,” a source told People. “She has been fighting to save the marriage.”
Another source told the magazine that Urban moving out was a huge factor in their split. “Their lives were moving in different directions, and once he quietly set up his own place, it felt like the writing was on the wall,” the source dished. Urban had reportedly seeked for Portugal residency in the months leading up to news of the split.
“It really hasn’t been a secret in their circles that Keith and Nicole have been living separately for a while now,” the source continued. “People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable.”
“She was blindsided, but we shall see how things go during the holiday season and his upcoming birthday [next month]. They have some work to do,” a source told the Daily Mail.
