When couples who have been together as long as Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban break up, it feels like love is dead. Or, at least, like celebrity life and marriage are not compatible. But with details about the couple’s breakup now surfacing, the reality feels like it’s all of that together, with a little more thrown in. Because sources indicate Kidman didn’t want the breakup. Not just that, but she didn’t even see it coming.
“She was blindsided, but we shall see how things go during the holiday season and his upcoming birthday [next month]. They have some work to do,” a source told the Daily Mail. That same source indicated the two had become more like roommates the last few months, instead of husband and wife, blaming distance and their busy schedules.

“The intimacy isn’t there, they are just going through the motions [of being married],” the source added.
Kidman and Urban have two daughters, who still live at home, and the responsibility of their care has fallen completely on Kidman. “Nicole has been holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone,” another source told TMZ. The singer, meanwhile, has been performing on his High and Alive world tour, and has reportedly already acquired another home and moved out of the one he shared with his wife and kids.
Despite all of this, sources have claimed to the Daily Mail that Kidman was indeed blindsided when Urban “[called] her out” over his “unhappiness” with their marriage. But those same sources indicate that there’s still love between the two, so though they are separated right now, they might “not divorce” and the next few months are crucial for the couple and the family unit they form with their two daughters.
Whether they can save their marriage or not might depend on whether they can figure out a way to spend time together and find common ground. Distance is seen as the ultimate killer for Hollywood couples, and with their busy schedules that don’t really seem to be slowing down, it might be hard to really figure out how to make each other a priority. But announcing a separation isn’t exactly the same as announcing a divorce, so it seems like there’s still hope for the two.
“Keith never sees Nicole, either she is filming or he is on tour,” the Daily Mail also reported. It’s reportedly gotten to the point where even friends have noticed and commented on it.
“It is shocking how much time they’ve spent apart since Nicole’s mother died,” one insider told the outlet. “It’s like they both went their separate ways.” They used to have a rule about not spending more than two weeks apart, but that is no longer the case.
“No one knows how long they can put up with this situation,” the insider said, and it seems like the answer is no more.
However, even the people closest to them seem to think there’s still hope. “She didn’t want this. She has been fighting to save the marriage,” a source told PEOPLE. Now, whether that hope materializes or not, we will have to wait and see.
