Princess Anne made a poignant surprise visit to Ukraine as one of her royal duties on Sept. 30. The Princess Royal’s visit has been compared to Harry’s discrete visit to the country right before.
According to People, Princess Anne went to the country to “show solidarity with the children and families living through the conflict and draw attention to the traumatic experiences of children living on the frontline.” During one of the events, Anne went to a tribute at the Children’s Memorial alongside the Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska. She placed a teddy bear in honor the children who have died since the invasion began. Sky News reported that the Princess Royal said, “That was one that my daughter had,” referring to Zara Tindall. Anne had also talked to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The visit comes weeks after Prince Harry toured the country after his reunion with his father King Charles. The Daily Beast reported that the U.K. government was lukewarm about Harry’s trip due to it clashing with a visit by the U.K.’s home secretary, Yvette Cooper. The purpose of Harry’s visit was to promote the work of the Duke of Sussex’s Invictus Games Foundation (IGF) to celebrate the recovery and rehabilitation of the thousands of veterans there who have suffered life-changing injuries since the war started.
As for what Prince Harry thinks about his aunt visiting the country, a source told the Daily Beast’s The Royalist that it was “great,” adding, “Anything that shines a light on what is going on in Ukraine is, absolutely, to be welcomed.”
An Invictus source who has worked with Harry agreed with the source, saying, “Anne is fantastic. This cause needs all the help it can get.”
Princess Anne’s visit comes after a source told The Times that the king felt “saddened and perplexed” by Harry’s suggestion that the palace was purposely trying to “sabotage” their reunion which was held at Clarence House on Sept 10. “The reality is that senior aides have been working behind the scenes to improve what is a delicate but important private family relationship,” the insider said.
King Charles’ reaction was a result after a representative for Harry denied a report by The Sun that that the meeting between Harry and Charles was “distinctly formal” and “very official.” “Recent reporting of the duke’s view of the tone of the meeting, is categorically false. The quotes attributed to him are pure invention — fed, one can only assume, by sources intent on sabotaging any reconciliation between father and son,” Harry’s spokesperson said in a statement.
