When Kate Middleton was first diagnosed with cancer, and for a lot of the time after that, we didn’t really see or hear anything from her or the British royal family. In fact, the speculation about her health and her whereabouts reached a fever pitch at one point; that’s how low-key the whole thing was kept. So, every time Middleton, Prince William, or anyone around them talks about her cancer or her recovery, people are interested to know more.
The latest insight comes from Prince William’s appearance in Eugene Levy’s new Apple TV+ series, The Reluctant Traveler. In the episode titled “Living the Royal Life in the UK,” the future King and the Schitt’s Creek star come together to take in the sights of the UK and discuss life. And well, Kate Middleton is a big part of Prince William’s life.

“We’ve been very lucky; we hadn’t had many illnesses in the family for a very long time. My grandparents lived until they were in the high 90s,” William says, referencing his late grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. “They were the vision of fitness, and stoicism, and resilience, if you like. So we’ve been very lucky as a family,” he added, before explaining. “But I think, when you suddenly realize that the rug, if you were, the metaphorical rug, can be pulled from under your feet quite quick at any point.”
He went into it a little more. “You maybe think to yourself, ‘It won’t happen to us, we’ll be OK.’ Because I think everyone has a positive outlook, you’ve got to be positive,” William said. “But when it does happen to you, then it takes you into some pretty not great places.”
At another point in the episode, William also talks about how hard the past few years have been. “I’d say ‘23-’24 was the hardest year I’ve ever had,” the prince shared. “You know, life is sent to test us and being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are,” the prince shares.
That was, indeed, a challenging time for the family as both Kate Middleton and King Charles were diagnosed with cancer. In September 2024, the Princess of Wales announced she had completed chemotherapy, saying, “As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” Middleton said. “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”
Then, in January 2025, Middleton announced that her cancer was in remission, saying, “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal,” she added. “I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”
King Charles, meanwhile, continues to be in treatment for his cancer.
Middleton recently spoke about the post-cancer period during a conversation with NHS patients and staff members. “You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment,” she said, adding, “Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal,’ but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.”
“You have to find your new normal and that takes time…and it’s a roller coaster, it’s not smooth, like you expect it to be,” Middleton explained. “But the reality is you go through hard times.”
