Things are turning around for King Charles and Prince Harry‘s reconciliation efforts. A new obstacle might have popped up regarding the Duke’s security entailment.

On October 10, reports came out that Harry had personally written a letter to the British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood in hopes of getting his security reinstated in his home country. The Duke formally requested a new “risk assessment” from the Royal and VIP Executive Committee. However, the move left a bad mark on the King.

A royal source told The Sunday Times in the UK that the situation “complicates things for the king. It’s not going to help matters. We are back to where we were.”

“The King cannot and will not lobby, that’s inappropriate. His representatives cannot advocate for policy outcomes, particularly in relation to his own family. The royal household representative on the Royal and VIP executive committee [Ravec], overseen by the Home Office, is not there to advocate a position for a member of the royal family. They are purely there as a liaison to the household.”

“If you put yourself in the mind of a father who is repeatedly told he should and could intervene, that is not very helpful, complicates matters and shows a lack of understanding about the reality of the situation,” the source explained.

Prince Harry spoke out about the decision when his security detail was denied when he returned to the UK in May, saying that the situation was a “a good old-fashioned establishment stitch up”, and told the BBC: “I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff.”

“There is a lot of control and ability in my father’s hands. Ultimately, this whole thing could be resolved through him. No necessarily by intervening, but by stepping aside, allowing the experts to do what is necessary.”

The father and son had their awaited reunion on Sept. 10., where they had tea at Clarence House. Prince Harry had told The Guardian some details about the reunion, but ultimately said about his father’s health, “Over the coming year, the focus really needs to be on my dad.”

He also detailed that he’s willing bring his kids to the UK, something he’d previously said he wouldn’t do. “Yes, I would. This week has definitely brought that closer,” he said during an interview with The Guardian.

A spokesman for the Duke of Sussex told People: “The duke has made it clear that the focus is his father. Beyond that, and on any other issues as it relates to his family, we won’t be commenting.”
