When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle walked away from being senior royals in 2020, that affected their relationships with everyone in the British royal family. Prince Harry has recently reunited with his father after over a year of not speaking, but King Charles also used to have a very good relationship with Meghan Markle. What has happened to that relationship?
Reports indicate that, though positive steps have been taken, there’s still a long way to go. Especially as the British royal family has reportedly taken comments Markle has made about life as part of the royalty to hear. For example, in the second season of her Netflix lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, Markle spoke about whether it was difficult to be relatable as a royal, and said, “No, I don’t find… I’m just being myself. So I think, probably, it was different several years ago where I couldn’t be as vocal. I had to wear nude pantyhose all the time. Let’s be honest, that was not very myself.”

According to RadarOnline.com, it wasn’t well-received. “For King Charles this kind of thing is wearying,” one source said. “Charles has tried to take a gentle, dignified approach with Harry and Meghan, but when she keeps making digs like this, it chips away at any chance of rebuilding trust. It’s not malicious, but it’s thoughtless – and the royal family sees that as just as damaging.”
The outlet also reported that “William once hoped there might be a way back for his brother and Meghan, but moments like this make it harder to believe,” adding, “It’s a tragedy, really – Harry and William’s mother would have wanted the family united, but that’s never going to happen now.”
It’s a little bit of a dramatic statement considering the steps that have been taken lately, and reports about Prince Harry’s willingness to try. “Harry’s been talking about spending more time in the U.K., possibly having a second home base there,” a source told RadarOnline.com, adding that he has also considered “returning for good.”
Markle reportedly isn’t on board with going that far, with the outlet saying she’s “shocked” that her husband “would even consider moving back to Britain after everything they’ve been through and how much work they’ve done to rebuild their lives in America,” with the source adding, “they want different things.” To add to this, reportedly, Harry “can be quite stubborn. Meghan isn’t one to back down either.”
There’s even speculation that this could cause problems in the marriage. “If this disagreement can’t be resolved, people around them fear it could lead to some explosive fights and maybe even divorce,” though reports about marriage trouble between the two basically come out every week.
However, there are also previous reports that King Charles and Meghan Markle had a very close relationship before Harry and Meghan stepped down as working royals. A book by royal expert Katie Nicholl, The New Royals, reveals that the King had a very high opinion of Markle’s strength of character and gave her a nickname to reflect this. Nicholl wrote: “Charles reportedly nicknamed his future daughter-in-law ‘Tungsten’ because of her toughness and resilience.”
There’s also the fact that King Charles walked Markle down the aisle in her wedding ceremony with Prince Harry, which her father did not attend. That all points to a very close relationship, one she—and King Charles—would probably be happy to repair now that things are moving along with Prince Harry.
