The announcement that Prince Andrew was giving up his titles and honors has come with many questions. Did he make the decision? Was he pressured by King Charles? How come he still gets to be a Prince, which is arguably a bigger title than that of Duke of York? And, what privileges is he losing due to giving up his title? What about his security, which was such a big sticking point for Prince Harry?
Reportedly, the answer is no. “Even though he, like Harry, is no longer a working royal, it appears that he will continue to receive royal protection,” royal expert Christopher Andersen told Us Weekly following Andrew’s decision. He went on to point that that Prince Andrew “lives on the grounds of Windsor Great Park, not far from the rest of the family, so it goes with the territory.”

Prince Harry, on the other hand, lives in the United States. He and his children, however, have been denied security when visiting the UK. This prompted Harry to declare that he would not take his kids back to his home country. His position seems to have softened after recently meeting with his father for the first time in over a year, but so far nothing has been announced.
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Friday, Oct. 17, Prince Andrew confirmed he would no longer be using his titles. “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.”
“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me,” he added.
This comes after reports that the King is under pressure to be harsher when it comes to his brother. A senior royal source told RadarOnline.com: “This latest revelation has made Andrew’s position utterly untenable,” adding, “The King is under immense pressure from advisers and senior courtiers to act decisively. There’s a feeling that if he doesn’t, the scandal will keep bleeding into the public domain and tarnish everything the monarchy is trying to rebuild.”
And that means the King is said to be considering all options. “It could mean taking away access to royal homes like Windsor or Sandringham and ensuring he’s excluded from all family gatherings except the most private ones. The phrase being used behind closed doors is ‘clip his wings completely.'”
There is, of course, the matter of Royal Lodge, where Andrew resides with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson. “The fact he’s still living in a royal home infuriates both the Palace and the public,” a royal household source said. “But the king’s hands are tied – Andrew has a watertight lease. The only real leverage is to make life there less comfortable.” That way, the King is hoping, it will once again be Andrew’s decision to leave. And if he does, well, security might no longer be necessary.
