One of Princess Diana’s closest friends, Lady Annabel Goldsmith, has died. She was 91.

The family released a statement about the socialite’s death. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Lady Annabel Goldsmith, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning at the age of 91,” the family said. She is survived by her five children Zac, Ben, Jemima Goldsmith – her three children from her second marriage to Sir James Goldsmith – and two children India Jane Birley and Robin Birley with Mark Birley. Her eldest with Mark Birley, Rupert, disappeared off the coast of Togo in 1986. It’s unclear who from the royal family will be in attendance at her funeral.

Her friendship with Princess Diana was well documented. The Princess of Wales was accompanied by Lady Annabel Goldsmith and her daughter, Jemima at the Imran Khan’s Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital. She also was a self-proclaimed ‘mother figure’ to her and her sons, Prince Harry and Prince William. Princess Diana would stay “most weekends with the boys,” Lady Annabel told Tatler in January 2019. “I suppose I was a mother figure to her. We were very close and when she died it was a blow.”

The news of her death comes after reports King Charles is looking weaker after his cancer diagnosis “You can’t Photoshop frailty,” one palace watcher said to ShuterScoop about his joint appearance with William at London’s COP30 climate summit. “What we’re seeing is the reality behind the crown — a monarch in decline.”

“His suit was hanging off him,” one insider told the Substack. “He looked like a man fighting something bigger than he’s letting on.”

The King very recently joked about his age during a visit to officially open the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick. According to the BBC, after a woman remarked to the king that she was “wearing out,” King Charles responded with: “That’s the terrible thing I’m discovering. Bits don’t work so well when you get past 70.”

However, it seems like his health being great is “impossible to spin.” Reportedly, preparations are already in place for what comes next. “They’re quietly preparing William to step up — fast,” one senior courtier revealed. “The illusion of perfect health is collapsing.”

Writer and associate editor of the Daily Telegraph, Camilla Tominey, said, “The talk now is that he may die ‘with’ cancer, but not ‘of’ cancer following a rigorous treatment program.”
