Diane Keaton was the kind of name everyone knew, but perhaps one of the most remarkable things about her long career in the spotlight is the fact that, even though she had long relationships, she was never really associated with one man. Diane Keaton was always just Diane Keaton. In this day and age, that’s remarkable.

But why is Diane Keaton’s legacy her own in such a way? What were her longer-lasting relationships? Did she ever marry?

Was Diane Keaton Ever Married Before Her Death?

Diane Keaton never married and never really came close to marriage during her time in Hollywood. But that doesn’t mean she didn’t have long relationships with other famous people in the industry. She had a long on/off relationship with her Godfather co-star Al Pacino, which lasted nearly a decade. The two split in the early 1990s, reportedly after she realized Pacino “was never going to be the marrying type.” Even years after their split, Keaton frequently referred to Pacino as “the love of her life” and the two reportedly remained close until her death.

But Pacino wasn’t the only big-name actor Keaton dated. She also had a brief affair with controversial director Woody Allen, with whom she collaborated in Annie Hall and Manhattan. Later, she dated Warren Beatty after starring with him in Reds. She even joked at one point that her biggest mistake was “falling in love with people I worked with.”

However, Keaton chose to stay single, something she spoke about a few years before her death. “Today I was thinking about this… I’m 73 and I think I’m the only one in my generation and maybe before who has been a single woman all her life,” she said, and explained her thinking on it. “I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife.’ And I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a wife. No.'”

She never was. But she did build her own family, later in life, adopting two children, daughter Dex, now 29, and son Duke, 25. She told Ladies Home Journal in 2008 about that decision, “I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother. Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist, it was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”

But marriage never came with that for Keaton. In fact, according to her friends, Keaton, a longtime animal lover who left $5 million of her $100 million fortune to her dog, Reggie, was pretty content with her life and her decisions. One friend described it as living her life, “on her own terms, exactly as she wanted, with or without a husband.”

Keaton died from pneumonia at the age of 79. Her family said in a statement to People: “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11.” However, other reports from Showbiz 411 and NewsNation, indicate Keaton was battling dementia in her later years.

“She was battling it for years,” a source shared with NewsNation. “It was so sad,” they shared while noting she wore an earpiece for her lines to be fed to her while filming Maybe I Do, in 2022. “(Co-star) William H. Macy was very supportive, but it was also frustrating because if there was any stopping — a bathroom break, a meal, anything — it was back to square one. It was heartbreaking to watch. She was just so lovely.”
