As first lady, Michelle Obama has dealt with a lot of speculation about her marriage. In a new interview with People, the Becoming author talked about the state of her marriage with Barack during his administration and what the couple has been up to these days.
When the Obamas lived in the White House, the couple received a little criticism about their looks and fashion, but they brushed it off with ease. “I took it for what it was, pure hypocrisy. I could pull up pictures of Jackie O in a second and see this fashion icon in sleeveless dresses as first lady. So at a point you’re like, ‘Oh, this is politics. If you can’t beat them, make everybody scared of them.’ That was the motto. If it wasn’t the clothes, it was “that terrorist fist bump.” It was every word that we said.”
The former first lady specifically mentioned the tan suit that her husband wore, where she discussed her unfiltered thoughts. “When he had it on, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, you look so cute,’ she recounted. “[Then] I was like, ‘Oh you got clocked for that one. Welcome to my world.’ That was towards the end of his presidency, so we were used to all the crazy issues that people would take with us.”
She also got candid about their married life and date nights. “We’ve been married 32, 33 [years]…I always forget. Sorry, honey,” she joked. “When we’re both happy about date night, we’re at home. We are not getting dressed. We just have a nice dinner, candles lit, music, we talk.
The IMO podcaster also opened up about some rituals they do on the day of their date. “We don’t talk for the whole day, because we’re in the house together all day, right? We work from home. So when we are going to have a really special night, it’s like, ‘Don’t talk to me. Save it for dinner.’ He’ll be like, ‘Did you talk to the girls?’ ‘I did, but we’re not going to talk about it until date night.’ But sometimes we go out for dinners in D.C. or wherever. I am too old, I can’t do dinner and a movie. I will fall asleep in the movie. So it’s like, ‘Let’s pick one.'”
The revelations come after Michelle Obama was subjected to divorce rumors skipped Donald Trump’s inauguration. On her podcast, she explained. “My decision to skip the inauguration, what people don’t realize, or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me, were met with such ridicule and criticism,” she said. “People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason, that they had to assume that my marriage was falling apart, you know.”
Like any couple, they aren’t attached to the hip and she explained her reasonings during NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin. “It’s like, OK, so we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives,” she said. “We are 60. We’re 60, y’all. We just, you just are not gonna know what we’re doing every minute of the day, you know?”
