One of the hardest things about dealing with an illness like cancer that not enough people talk about is the effect it has on your family, particularly young children. Dealing with the illness is complicated enough without having to worry about how others will take it. But the considerations are different when it comes to young kids, who need to be explained what it all means and what will happen next.
Prince William recently spoke about talking to his kids about Kate’s cancer diagnosis during an interview with Brazilian TV host Luciano Huck in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a country he was in to mark the fifth Earthshot Prize.

“We choose to communicate a lot more with our children… most of the time, hiding stuff from them doesn’t work”, he said. “Every family has its own difficulties and its own challenges. It’s very individual and sort of moment-dependent as to how you deal with those problems.”
The Prince of Wales added, “Sometimes you feel you’re oversharing with the children”, he said in reference to George, 12, Charlotte, 10, and Louis, 7. “But most of the time, hiding stuff from them doesn’t work, and so explaining how they feel, why that’s happening, giving them other viewpoints as to why they might be feeling like they are sometimes helps give them a bigger picture, and they can relax more into it rather than being really anxious about ‘what are you hiding from me’?”, adding, “There’s a lot more questions when there’s no answers.”
All of this comes after reports that the Prince wanted to cut back on royal duties in 2024 amid his wife’s cancer diagnosis, but his father urged him to reconsider. It’s important to remember that at the same time Middleton was going through cancer, so was King Charles. In fact, Middleton is now in remission while the King continues under treatment for his cancer.
Royal biographer Robert Jobson claimed in The Windsor Legacy , obtained exclusively by the DailyMail, that William was “shaken to the core” by his father and wife being diagnosed at the same time. However, the King would not allow him to step back.
Multiple royal experts confirmed to Fox News Digital that William had a hard time in 2024. “It proved to take a toll on him,” said British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard. “He struggled to keep everything on track,” she added. “The fact that he spoke to his father regarding the workload showed strength and a caring side. He needed a breather to bounce back and give his all to the monarchy. He should be applauded for his honesty and for recognizing he needed a moment to step back.”
“William’s desire to reduce engagements was actually more about the strains he was coping with — supporting Princess Catherine during her health challenges, the emotional demands of young children and, on top of that, his duties as heir to the throne,” British royals expert Hilary Fordwich told the outlet.
“He’s extremely determined to protect his family while modernizing the monarchy,” Fordwich said. “He knows the future of the monarchy depends on his approval ratings, so he’s under considerable pressure. It was really causing him significant stress.”
These days, things are looking up for the family in terms of health. Middleton is in remission, and though King Charles is still under treatment for cancer, some reports indicate it is not life-threatening.
