Justin Trudeau’s Ex-Wife Issues Emotional Statement as He Moves on With Katy Perry: ‘I Let Myself Be Angry’
Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry’s new relationship started pretty soon after the singer’s split from Orlando Bloom. But that’s not the main reason why the romance has made headlines. No, it’s mostly got the do with the high profile of who she’s dating. You can’t exactly go out with a former Canadian Prime Minister and expect to fly under the radar.
Like Perry, Trudeau recently separated. In August of 2023, he and his wife Sophie Grégoire announced they were splitting after 18 years of marriage. The former couple shares 3 kids, Xavier, 17, Ella-Grace, 16, and Hadrien, 11.

In an Instagram post published at the time, Trudeau wrote: “Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate. As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy. Thank you.”
Now, on an appearance on the podcast “Arlene is Alone,” Grégoire spoke about her ex and the public scrutiny that comes with him dating a star like Katy Perry, with host Arlene Dickinson remarking how “cool” is about it.
“You know, we’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal,” Grégoire explained. “How you react to stuff is your decision. So, I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise.”
Trudeau and Perry were first seen having dinner together in July. After that, Trudeau attended a Perry concert during her Lifetimes tour, which is around the time people really started paying attention to their romance. They weren’t spotted together for a while, leading to reports that things had cooled off, but in September, they were photographed embracing, and then in October, they went public with their romance after they were seen holding hands at the Crazy Horse cabaret in Paris.
Grégoire spoke about how she deals with it, saying that she is “very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers.”
“What I do with it is my decision,” she added.” The woman I want to become through this is my decision.”
But she’s still letting herself feel things. “I’ll let myself be disappointed by someone, I’ll let myself be angry, be sad,” she explained. “And I know for a fact how important it is, as a mental health advocate, to feel those emotions.”
And she also made it clear that, despite how complicated the relationship is, she’s not a single mom. “I’m definitely not a single mom,” Grégoire said. “I have a partnership with a father who has such deep love and availability to his children.”
It seems like, as complicated as this moment in time is for Grégoire and for her family, she and Trudeau are doing their best to co-parent in a way that will give their kids a healthy, safe environment. Romance with a superstar singer for their dad or not.
