Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, are not immune to the political speculation machine, particularly when it comes to their marriage. People speculate about the Obamas all the time, just as they do about President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump. But in this case, the speculation started for a very particular reason: Usha Vance stepping out without her wedding ring.

In celebrity circles, that’s tantamount to a declaration. But what does it mean for the vice president and second lady? According to a spokesperson for the second lady, nothing. A statement released to People says that Usha Vance is “a mother of three young children, who does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and forgets her ring sometimes.”

Speculation started after Usha Vance was spotted without her ring during a visit alongside First Lady Melania Trump to Camp Lejeune, a military training facility in Jacksonville, N.C.

Usha and JD Vance married in 2014 and share three kids: sons Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and daughter Mirabel, 3.

Outlets like RadarOnline.com have recently placed a lot of emphasis on Vance’s marriage ever since he appeared with Erika Kirk at a Turning Point USA event. Kirk introduced Vance with the following words: “No one will ever replace my husband. But I do see some similarities of my husband in J.D. — in Vice President J.D. Vance. I do. And that’s why I am so blessed to be able to introduce him tonight.”

The two then shared a hug on stage that many outlets have dissected. RadarOnline even consulted a body language expert and behaviour analyst, Traci Brown, who said she believes the Vice President and Erika Kirk are “super close” based on that one interaction.

“Or she wants to be super close. And he’s not saying no, right?” she explained. “If I was Usha… I would have liked to be a fly on the wall in the car ride home.”

Brown also said the hug showed a “general lack of boundaries.”

“Is it over her whole life? Don’t know. But definitely right now, the stress has heightened that,” she added.

During that same event, Vance made some comments about his wife that raised some eyebrows. “How are you teaching your kids not to keep your religion ahead of their mother’s religion?… Why are we making Christianity one of the major things that you have to have in common to be one of you guys, to show that I love America just as you do?” Vance was asked.

“Everybody has to come to their own arrangement here,” he answered. “The way that we’ve come to our arrangement is she’s my best friend. We talk to each other about this stuff. So, we’ve decided to raise our kids Christian.”

Vance also noted his wife comes to church with him “most Sundays,” and went on to add he hopes she will one day be ” moved by the same thing” that moved him at church.

“Yeah, honestly, I do wish that, because I believe in the Christian gospel and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way,” he explained. “But if she doesn’t, then God says everybody has free will and so that doesn’t cause a problem for me.”

Circumstantial evidence of marriage problems, at best, but that won’t stop people from speculating.
