Ever since King Charles was first diagnosed with cancer, there have been conflicting reports about what kind of cancer he has and what treatment he’s receiving. The British royal family hasn’t exactly confirmed any of these things, but that has never stopped people from speculating. And worrying. The king was, after all, the oldest monarch to succeed to the British throne to begin with, and adding cancer to it is always concerning.

And now, RadarOnline.com is reporting from former royal butler Paul Burrell that the dynamics of the castle make it so only one person is able to tell Charles “No.” Burrell spoke about the King’s temperament in a book titled: The Royal Insider: My Life with the Queen, the King and Princess Diana.

“Charles has always lived in a world where all his household and staff bow and call him ‘Your Royal Highness.’ Now, of course, it is ‘Your Majesty.’ “Nobody says no. If you do, you’re out,” he wrote. He lives in a gilded bubble and is served whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and by whom he wants.”

According to Burrell, Queen Camilla is the only exception ot this. “The only person that can say ‘No’ is Camilla. She is and always will be a non-negotiable. Perhaps her no-nonsense approach is what Charles needs,” he continued.

“She’s the steady hand on the tiller of the royal ship now, like it or not. She is at the helm. She rarely asks for anything but is given everything and now has the ultimate position as Queen.”

RadarOnline reports from insiders that everyone understands these dynamics. “His Majesty is set in his ways, often to the point of stubbornness. If anyone is going to push back, it’s the Queen. She’s the only one he listens to when he digs his heels in. It goes for everything from his cancer treatments to his treatment of his sons and wider family.”

Another royal insider added, “Charles has a deep sense of certainty about how things should be done. It can come across as pig-headed. Camilla is the only voice that can consistently pierce that armor.”

Ironically, this comes after a few months ago, Radar Online reported that the two, who got married in 2005, are “divorced in everything but name” and lead “largely separate lives” to “keep up with appearances.” Doesn’t really seem to mesh with the previous report. “They are putting on a united front in public, especially because Charles is ill, but behind the scenes it’s a very different picture,” a source said at the time.

“They are divorced in everything but name. Camilla lives at Ray Mill most of the time, while Charles retreats to Highgrove or Clarence House. It’s a marriage of appearances and public relations optics at this stage,” the insider said.

Whether that is true or not, it seems like Camilla will indeed continue to be an important figure in the British royal family. Especially if she is, indeed, the only one the king will listen to.
