Royal protocol is confusing at times. And considering how many rules there are, things can seem awkward. Queen Camilla and Kate Middleton were caught in the middle of a seemingly awkward, if innocuous moment, during the recent state visit by German President and first lady Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender. But they seem to solve it with a smile.

Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed the German President and first lady at the airport and escorted them to meet with King Charles and Queen Camilla. Once they arrived, the President and first lady walked ahead of William and Kate, with the two taking their place to the side. Once there, Kate dropped into a curtsey, which Queen Camilla seemed to miss as she was greeting the first lady.

Realizing that Camilla had missed the gesture, Kate made sure to repeat it when Camilla was looking at her. The Queen smiled and seemed to blow her a kiss.

It all looked like a really positive interaction, despite the awkwardness, and it goes against so many recent reports that the relationship between the two is not good. But then again, that seems to be the norm for the royal family. If we believed all the reports, then we’d be forced to assume absolutely no one gets along, and they probably never have.

The recent reports about their feud alleged it had been going on for a while, but that it got worse after the state visit from US President Donald Trump. “The tension was impossible to ignore,” an insider told Closer. “Every gesture and every colour choice felt like a power move. It was Kate who drew the attention, and that didn’t go down well with Camilla. From the moment Kate arrived, she proved herself to be the real power player.”

One moment in particular caught people’s attention. After Middleton escorted first lady Melania Trump to greet Camilla, when the President and first lady first arrived, Camilla seemed to dismiss her. “It was subtle, but Kate felt sidelined,” the source explained. “She’s worked hard to position herself as the monarchy’s future, and being asked to literally move aside was humiliating. She won’t have it going forward.”

But reports on Kate were all positive. “She completely outshone Camilla and everyone noticed it. There were moans and groans behind the scenes at how well Kate was doing, because everyone knew it would go down like a lead balloon at the debrief afterwards. Kate showed who the real star of the show is, and it was impossible not to notice the contrast.”

Last year Us Weekly reported on Kate and Camilla’s secret “tense relationship,” with the publication saying that Camilla has been vocal behind closed doors that Charles should stay on as King for as long as he possibly can. “She loves her responsibilities,” an insider explained. “Her whole life, she has always wanted to be queen, so she doesn’t want to let it go so fast.”

The two are also just said to have different personalities. Power and the Palace author Valentine Low told GB News a few months ago that Camilla’s personality is “completely different” from Kate’s. “Kate is a completely different person to Camilla. She’s very controlled and cautious, and careful,” he said. “Camilla is much more outgoing. She says what she thinks, she’s incredibly engaging, Camilla, and funny. That’s not to say Kate can’t be funny in private, but you know, it’s much more obviously the case with Camilla.”

In this particular instance, however, it seemed like rumors of a feud were very much exaggerated.
