Justin Trudeau Takes Official Step in Relationship With Katy Perry After Reports He’s Dating Her For ‘Celebrity Status’ to Make Him ‘More Famous’
Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau have been dating for a few months already, but they’re finally taking the first steps towards a public celebrity relationship. And when celebrities want to go public, what do they do? Well, first, they let themselves be photographed together—as Perry and Trudeau already did for her birthday. And then, well, then they announce it on social media.
That’s right. Perry and Trudeau have gone Instagram official. On December 6, Perry shared a carousel of images on her social media account, which included a photo of herself and the former Canadian Prime Minister posing cheek to cheek and a short video of her and Trudeau while she tries out uni, or sea urchin. Perry was in Japan as part of her Lifetimes Tour. She performed in Tokyo last Wednesday.

Previously, reports had indicated the couple was making holiday plans together, so it seems like things are serious.
Ironically, her social media announcement was undercut by former Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, who last week shared a photo on social media of him, his wife, Yuko Kishida, Trudeau, and Perry.
Justin Trudeau responded to the photo on X, writing, “Katy and I were so glad to have the chance to sit down with you and Yuko. Thank you, Fumio, for your friendship and your continued commitment to both the international rules-based order and to a better future for everyone.”
Still, that doesn’t mean the step of posting pictures with Trudeau on her own Instagram isn’t important.
All of this comes after reports from Star that there’s concern Trudeau likes the public side of the relationship a little too much. “People have been fascinated with Katy for years, and they’re always going to be curious about what she does next,” a source told the outlet. “Not so with Justin. He’s a nepo baby who flamed out in his political career and doesn’t have much of a path forward without his celebrity status.”
Trudeau resigned from his position in the government in January amid low approval ratings and pressure from his own party. There has been no confirmation about whether he wants to remain in politics or he’s looking to transition into something different.
“Dating Katy has made him more famous, in a positive way, and he doesn’t want this trend to stop,” the source added. “It’s absolutely key to his survival as a public figure,” the source says. Despite these reports, the two haven’t actually been seen together in public all that much and took quite a few months to make it Instagram official. It’s kind of the typical playbook for two celebrities dating each other.
Trudeau and Perry were first rumored to be dating in July 2025, soon after Perry broke up with her ex-fiancé, Orlando Bloom. The two were first spotted having dinner together, with Trudeau attending one of Perry’s concerts around the same time. But it was months before they were seen together again, stepping out in public together and holding hands outside the Crazy Horse in Paris for Perry’s birthday in October 2025.
Odd pairing or not, the two seem to be very happy. And they’re not ashamed to flaunt it on social media.
