Film legend Rob Reiner was very outspoken against President Donald Trump before and during his presidency. A day after the When Harry Met Sally director died, the president went on his social media to rant about him and his critical stances.
The actor and director was found dead in his home in Los Angeles on Dec. 14, along with his wife, Michele. The couple was found with their throats slit, according to ABC News. Their son Nick was arrested in connection with the double homicides and is held with no bond.
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”
“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before.”
Reiner took aim at Trump in 2017 in an interview with Variety: “Donald Trump is the single most unqualified human being to ever assume the presidency of the United States. He is mentally unfit. Not only does he not understand how government works, he has no interest in trying to find out how it works.”
Reiner remained a critic of Trump until his death. In 2024, Reiner told the Guardian: “He wants to destroy the Constitution, go after his political enemies and turn America into an autocracy? We see autocracy making its move around the world. And so if we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumbles around the world.”
After the president made his post, several celebrities and politicians condemned what he wrote. “Trump you disgusting, vile, egomaniac, loser, child,” musician Jack White wrote on Instagram. “Neither he nor any one of his followers can defend this gross, horrible insult to a beautiful artist who gave the world so much. To use someone’s tragic death to promote your own vanity and fascist authoritarian agenda is a corrupt and narcissistic sin.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote, “This is a sick man.” While Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote, “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies. Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”
