Michelle and Barack Obama were supposed to meet with Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, on the night of their murder. The former first lady went on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to talk about her friend’s legacy while also addressing Donald Trump‘s social media post about the iconic director.
“We were supposed to be seeing them that night – last night,” the Becoming author told the late-night host. “And we got the news. Let me just say this: Unlike some people, Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know.”
Without naming Donald Trump, Michelle Obama lauded her friend who was “not deranged or crazed,” in a detailed response to Trump’s comments.
“What they have always been are passionate people in a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on,” she said. “They were the kind of people who were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about, and they cared about their family, and they cared about this country, and they cared about fairness and equity. That is the truth. I do know them.”
After Rob Reiner‘s death, Trump went on his social media platform Truth Social to react. “A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”
“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before.”
Trump later doubled down on his comments in a press conference. “I wasn’t a fan of his at all, he was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned,” the president said.
Reiner was a vocal critic of Trump when he was alive, telling Variety that the president was “the single most unqualified human being to ever assume the presidency of the United States. He is mentally unfit. Not only does he not understand how government works, he has no interest in trying to find out how it works.”
President Barack Obama also shared his thoughts about his friend’s death on X. “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele,” he wrote. “Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
Reiner and his wife were found dead in their Brentwood home on Dec. 14. Their son, Nick, was arrested on suspicion of their deaths and is being held without bond.
