Being the second lady is a level of spotlight Usha Vance, wasn’t really used to, and one that has clearly taken some getting used to for someone so private. Because it’s not just about being married to the Vice-president, it’s a lot of individual work. And a lot of that involves the first lady, in this case Melania Trump. But how do the two of them get along?
According to an interview Vance gave to USA Today, pretty well. “We really get along pretty well. I’ve enjoyed traveling with her a little bit and talking to her about things like raising kids in this kind of crazy life, about our interests and hobbies and that sort of thing,” said Vance. Not that she could have really said anything else, all things considered.

But she didn’t go as far as to pretend they’re best friends. “And you know, we’re different people, but different people who can enjoy having conversation together.” Okay, if she says so.
Vance also complimented Melania Trump on “getting things done” and being “very, very focused on doing things her way.”
All very, very vague and complimentary in that general and superficial way you talk about a spouse of a coworker you don’t really like but you know you will have to continue seeing, so it’s better to keep the peace.
This all comes amid rumors that Usha and JD Vance are going through some rough times in their marriage. It all started after Usha Vance was seen without her ring on during a visit to Camp Lejeune in Richlands, North Carolina, alongside first lady Melania Trump. Then, she was seen without the ring again as the two visited a holiday volunteer event at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
A spokesperson for the second lady responded to the speculation, telling People that Usha Vance is “a mother of three young children, who does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and forgets her ring sometimes.”
The vice president then went on to address the rumors during an interview with NBC News on December 5, saying. “I think that we kind of get a kick out of it,” adding, “With anything in life, you take the good with the bad. You accept that there are some sacrifices and there are some very good things that come along with it, too. But our marriage is as strong as it’s ever been, and I think Usha’s really taken to it, and it’s been kind of cool to see how she’s developed and evolved in this new role.”
In fact, when the Vice-President was asked if the divorce speculation had been “tough,” he responded, “It’s funny. I actually don’t think that it’s tough.” No comment on how his wife feels about it, but she would probably just give us a diplomatic answer if anyone ever asked.
Usha and JD Vance married in 2014 and have three kids together: sons Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and daughter Mirabel, 3.
