Rob Gronkowski knows how to save. The retired football player reportedly never spent a dime from his NFL contract.

The former New England Patriots tight end played for the team for eight years, and later announced his retirement, only to make a comeback as a free agent and play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He later announced his re-retirement the following year. Gronk has emphasized that he’s only spent his “marketing money” and that he was not focused on buying “expensive cars” or “expensive jewelry or tattoos.” He also spoke to Forbes saying that he had his rent covered and he would usually eat his meals at the facilities.

What was Rob Gronkowski’s NFL salary?

TAMPA, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 07: Rob Gronkowski #87 and Tom Brady #12 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers celebrate winning Super Bowl LV at Raymond James Stadium on February 07, 2021 in Tampa, Florida.

When signing with the New England Patriots, Rob Gronkowski signed a four-year, $4.4 million contract, plus a $1.76 million signing bonus. When he was up for renewal, it was bumped to six-year, $9 million contract with a $8 million signing bonus. He later signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent for a $8 million contract with a $6.25 million signing bonus.

In his 2015 memoir, It’s Good to Be Gronk, Gronkowski revealed that he hasn’t spent any earnings from his NFL salary. “To this day, I still haven’t touched one dime of my signing bonus or NFL contract money,” he wrote. “I live off my marketing money and haven’t blown it on any big-money expensive cars, expensive jewelry or tattoos and still wear my favorite pair of jeans from high school.

“I don’t hurt anyone. … I don’t do drugs, I don’t drive drunk, I don’t break the law. … [I’m] just looking to have a fun time.”

In 2025, he addressed the “technicality” of that statement. “Technically, it’s true,” Gronkowski said on the BussinWiththeBoys podcast. “(Agent) Drew Rosenhaus actually gave me a $50,000 up front, like marketing budget at the beginning, and you got to pay them back over the time, the first fifty grand you made.”

He later clarified that he was “frugal” about his money because he didn’t know what his future would look like. “I didn’t know how long the NFL was gonna last. I was a second-round pick, so it was like a four-year, $4,000,000 deal, and I was like, if I played this contract out, I’ll be set for life,” he explained. “I got $2,000,000 in my bank, I can make a hundred and two hundred thousand dollars of interest.”

“I was like, if I only played three (or) four years, I’m good. And I wanted that situation for me too, that I could be good as well. Like, hey, if I don’t ball, if I’m not the player that I think I could be, whatever, I’m still set for life, because $2,000,000 in the bank is set for life to me at that time.”

“So I just always wanted to save it, and I just used my money that I was getting off the field to just spend it on whatever I needed to spend it on,” Gronkowski added. “It just kept continuing, and to this day, technically, I have not spent any of my NFL money.”
