More than a week after their deaths, Rob Reiner and his wife Michele’s medical records are being sealed under a court order sought by Los Angeles police.

In a statement to NBC, the Los Angeles Police Department said that they “sought to seal” the records “to ensure detectives from Robbery-Homicide Division learned of important information surrounding their deaths before the media and the public” and that “the order was not sought to undermine transparency.”

“While the cause and manner of death were previously released on these cases, due to the court order, the information is no longer available,” the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said in a press statement. “No other case information or records, including the Medical Examiner report, can be released or posted on the website until further notice. The Department understands the public’s interest in these cases and remains committed to transparency when possible. Information will be made available once the court order is lifted.”

The LAPD told People in a statement: “The causes of death of Mr. and Mrs. Reiner have already been made public. The order was sought only to ensure detectives from Robbery-Homicide Division learned of important information surrounding their deaths before the media and the public. The order was not sought to undermine transparency.”

Rob and Michele Reiner’s cause of death was released on Dec. 17. The report indicates the two died of “multiple sharp force injuries,” with their deaths officially being ruled a “homicide.” The date of death is established as December 14, 2025.

TMZ obtained a copy of their death certificates and confirmed that the two had died “with [a] knife, by another.” The time between the onset of injuries and death is listed as “minutes.” Rob’s death was listed at 3:45 p.m., and Michele, who is listed as “widowed,” was discovered at 3:46 p.m. Their bodies were cremated at Mount Sinai Mortuary after the autopsies were completed.

Their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested on Dec. 14 and is charged with two counts of murder with special circumstance allegations that he used a knife, according to court documents. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

TMZ reported that Nick Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the weeks leading up to his parents’ murder. Sources told the site that 3 to 4 weeks before the murders, doctors changed his meds. The source claimed that they were adjusting the medications so Nick stabilized, but it wasn’t working. The change reportedly made him “erratic and dangerous.”
