Rob Reiner is getting a tribute during the Golden Globes monologue. Second-time host Nikki Glaser says she will include a little piece of the late director and actor in the show.
Reiner’s tragic death struck Hollywood in mid-December after he and his wife, Michele, were found dead in their Los Angeles home. “I knew (Reiner), but not that well,” the comedian told USA Weekly. “I’m not going to linger on it too much because I think that’s what we’ve been doing for the past few weeks. But obviously, I thought if something happened to me and Rob Reiner was hosting a show, given our relationship, how would I want him to handle it? I think I landed on something that I feel he would do for me, too.”
Fellow comedian Chelsea Handler made a tribute during her monologue at the Critics’ Choice Awards held on Jan 4. “Anyone who ever spent time with Rob Reiner knows that the minute you met him, he felt like an old friend,” Handler, 50, told the audience assembled at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. “When you were in a conversation with him, he was present and he was focused and he was funny, and he would ask you tons of questions, whether you were discussing politics or film or the latest beauty trends, he was all in.”
Since the Golden Globes doesn’t have a proper in memoriam section of the show like the Oscars, Emmys, or Grammys, Glaser will handle the dedication “delicately.”
“So there’s not a whole section set aside to honor everyone we’ve lost,” says Glaser. “But I have something planned that I’m going to do in my own way to just acknowledge [Reiner] and celebrate him in my own way.”
The Golden Globes have never done an In Memoriam during the awards show. “We have not done an ‘In Memoriam’ on the Golden Globes. Those things are handled really well by the Oscars and the Screen Actors Guild,” Globes producer Barry Adelman told People via Entertainment Weekly in 2019. In the same interview, Adelman said that the awards show usually commemorates In Memoriam on their website.
Rob Reiner is featured on the Golden Globes website in their sole In Memoriam section. The website acknowledges Reiner was nominated for nine Golden Globes: Five as TV supporting actor for All in the Family, and four as film director, for Stand By Me (1986), When Harry Met Sally (1989), A Few Good Men (1992) and The American President (1995).
