Royals, they’re just like us. It’s nice to remember that, particularly considering that Kate, William, and the rest of the royal family live very comfortable lives, and the problems they face on the day to day don’t look like the ones normal people face. But sometimes, they have some pretty normal habits. Or not?
Last year, during a visit to Duchy College Stoke Climsland in July, Prince William revealed to Louise Harland, who was there with her own dog Jacks, that the couple’s dogs, Orla, sleeps with them on the bed. Harland told Hits Radio Cornwall, “[He] said that his little dog sleeps on the bed with them at night, with him and Kate.”

This might be controversial to some, but it’s actually pretty common among dog owners.
Orla, a black cocker spaniel, has been part of the family since 2020 and was reportedly a gift from Kate’s brother James Middleton. The couple has shared pictures of the dog on social media.
Kate and William have had their own dogs since 2011. They first had a spaniel named Lupo, who was reportedly a great comfort for Kate whilst her husband was away in the Falklands. He passed away in 2020, which is when the couple got Orla.
Kate’s brother, James Middleton, has shared his thoughts on why the couple has such a strong affinity for dogs. “I think it’s because dogs don’t care who you are. A dog looks at the King or Queen the same way that my dogs look at me,” he told Hello!. “I think, in everyone’s life, they are the best secret-keepers.”
The late Queen Elizabeth II also had a fascination with dogs, corgis in particular. But those dogs didn’t get to sleep in her bed. “There is a special corgi room where they have raised wicker baskets lined with cushions to keep draughts away,” royal author Penny Junor said in All The Queen’s Corgis.
All of this about Kate and William allowing Orla to sleep in their bed at night comes as a new book about Middleton and Prince William’s marriage is set to be released soon. The Mirror‘s royal editor, Russell Meyer, wrote William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, which reportedly features never-before-heard stories about the couple. Perhaps something about their love for dogs will even make it in.
A descriptor promises “never-before-told context about the biggest stories to have followed the Prince and Princess of Wales in recent years – including the Sussex departure, the forming of the ‘Cambridge way’, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II – and provides an unprecedented glimpse into the private lives.”
“The result is a truly intimate portrait of William and Catherine; providing not just unparallelled insight into who they are as individuals, but seismic revelations about them as a couple and the world they inhabit,” the descriptor goes on to add. “This biography moves beyond the headlines as it explores love, resilience, and their journey together as they navigate their public duties amid this unprecedented era.”
