Some decisions about family are complicated. And perhaps one of the most pivotal ones is who your children’s godparents are. You, after all, want someone who can and will step up to care for them if needed, but also someone who will provide a good example. With US Vice-President JD Vance and wife Usha, announcing they are expecting their fourth child, people are already wondering who will be the godfather. Will it be US President Donald Trump?
Reportedly, Trump expects that to be the case. According to gossip columnist Rob Shuter’s sources, “Trump absolutely assumes he’ll be the godfather,” I was told. “In his mind, it’s a given. But no one has formally invited him into that role.”

Trump and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, reportedly called the Vances to congratulate him, but the godfather question wasn’t posed. “It wasn’t a question — it was more of an expectation,” Shuter said, “That’s classic Trump. He assumes proximity equals privilege.”
Vance and his wife, Usha, are already parents to Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. And it seems like the parents-to-be are just focusing on the new baby. “They’re focused on the baby, not politics,” Shuter added, “They haven’t chosen godparents yet — and they’re very aware of the optics.”
“Everything around them is scrutinized,” the columnist also said, “Even a godparent becomes a headline.”
That much is certainly true, as the announcement that the second lady was expecting came after a few weeks of rumors that Usha and JD Vance’s marriage was on the rocks. It all started when Usha Vance was seen without her ring on during an official event alongside first lady Melania Trump. Then, it happened again.
At the time, a spokesperson for the second lady told People that Usha Vance is “a mother of three young children, who does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and forgets her ring sometimes.”
Vance addressed the rumors head-on during an interview with NBC News on December 5, 2025, saying. “I think that we kind of get a kick out of it,” adding, “With anything in life, you take the good with the bad. You accept that there are some sacrifices and there are some very good things that come along with it, too. But our marriage is as strong as it’s ever been, and I think Usha’s really taken to it, and it’s been kind of cool to see how she’s developed and evolved in this new role.”
He even seemed to shrug off any suggestions that the divorce speculation had been “tough,” saying, “It’s funny. I actually don’t think that it’s tough,” and implying the two found it funny to see the headlines.
Considering the latest news, it’s safe to assume their marriage is probably doing well. And, as for whether Trump will end up being the godfather of JD Vance’s youngest child, we will have to wait and see. But if that’s really what Trump wants and expects, will anyone say no to him?
