Jeff Bezos has seemingly been a friend of the Trumps—at least for the last few years. The Amazon founder invited the President to his wedding to Lauren Sanchez, though Trump did not attend, and has been seen in White House events. Ivanka Trump and her husband did attend the Bezos wedding. And, of course, the new Melania Trump documentary is an Amazon MGM movie.

But Bezos was missing from the White House screening of Melania Trump’s new film, even though guests included the CEOs of Apple, Zoom, and Advanced Micro Devices, as well as Amazon execs Andy Jassy and Mike Hopkins. Whether that indicates drama or not remains to be seen.

Page Six reported that the screening included custom-made popcorn buckets, framed screening tickets and a military band playing a song from the film called, “Melania’s Waltz.” But Bezos’ absence was noted, enough that Marc Beckman, a producer on the film and Melania’s exclusive senior advisor clarified Bezos’ involvement.

“Bezos wasn’t involved in the contract negotiations at all, ever… He never had a conversation with me about anything surrounding the film — ever,” Beckman told Page Six, despite the fact that Bezos and his wife visited Mar-A-Lago last year.

“Here’s what actually happened,” Beckman said. “The only interaction during that family meal between Melania and Jeff — with regards to the film — was that when Melania commented to Jeff that I was in talks with Amazon’s executive leadership, Bezos had no idea about the film or the contract negotiation. He wasn’t aware that I was already in talks with his team, and didn’t know about the film itself.  It was a friendly meal with family members present, and definitely not a setting for a contract negotiation.”

He added, “[The] first person I reached out to at Amazon was in its executive leadership … I never interacted with Jeff — not an email, a text, he was never involved,” adding “during the process, I became very impressed with Amazon’s team, their vision, and experience in the film industry. It was definitely one of the key determining factors in making the deal.”

The documentary follows first lady Melania Trump during the 20 days leading up to Donald Trump’s second inauguration, and is directed by Brett Ratner. The film is set to premiere simultaneously at 20 venues nationwide on Jan. 29. It will open nationwide a day after, on January 30th. The first lady and President Trump will attend the Washington, DC, premiere at the newly renamed The Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center For the Performing Arts.

And the promotion for the movie has already started, with ad campaigns being run across 30 countries, from the side of the Duomo in Italy, to Piccadilly Circus in London, England. There was also an ad on the Las Vegas Sphere.
