There have been many conversations about President Donald Trump’s health and the way he seemingly doesn’t know basic facts a President should know. He’s prone to exaggeration, and that is part of it, but he also seemingly forgets things. That was in full display as he accompanied his wife, first lady Melania Trump, to the premiere of her documentary Melania at the newly renamed The Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center For the Performing Arts.

When asked about the project, Trump said, “Well, I am proud of her. She’s still doing a great job. It’s a thing like, this is not easy, and years she comes from my faraway country, a wonderful country, clean, beautiful, safe.” No mention of which country it was, of course.

“They don’t have problems like others have, but she comes from a country that’s a very safe country. Good country in many ways, but it’s different. And she’s, uh, she’s picked it up very easily, speaks a lot of languages, very smart, understands what’s happening, and really is a good influencer,” he said.

For the record, Melania Trump was born in Slovenia, the former Yugoslavia, in 1970.

The President did continue to praise Melania, even after the blunder. “I think she’s really been a great help. She’s done a great job: Very respected, very smart, very measured, very measured — sometimes when I’m not so measured.”

Melania, for her part, was all smiles as she walked the red carpet, talking to reporters about what she hopes people take away from her new documentary. “They will see a lot of emotion, fashion, grief, sadness, celebration, love. That’s the message for the people,” she said.

Their joint appearance at the premiere comes after reports that things are not well in their marriage. Michael Wolff told the Daily Beast Podcast in May of 2025 that the two were effectively “separated” and “live separate lives.”

According to People, the two keep their own separate schedules, with the outlet claiming, “There is little interaction between them, just what is expected,” according to a source. “Then they go back to doing their own thing.”

But the two did ring in the new year together, and even exchanged the customary kiss at midnight. “Melania was happy and enjoying the night while the president looked bored and tired, but was nice to the guests and wishing them well,” a source told People. Despite that, the outlet had previously reported that they both split their time between the White House and Palm Beach and “have quarters in the White House,” but that Melania Trump “leads her own life and joins him when appropriate.”

A White House spokesman responded to the claims about the marriage, saying, “President Trump and the entire administration work 24/7 for the American people to deliver on the promise to Make America Great Again. The Trump Family is the most successful family of all time.” It is very much not an answer, and it’s getting harder and harder to deny that there might be a grain of truth in the speculation, considering the President can’t even remember where his wife is from.
