Today host Savannah Guthrie was noticeably absent during the Feb. 2 episode of the morning show. Over the weekend, her mother, Nancy Guthrie, was reported missing in Tucson by her family.
Her family last saw her at home around 9:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Nancy is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
NBC crime reporter Tom Winter confirmed that the search for Nancy Guthrie is still continuing and the FBI was involved in the situation. “They were able to get out helicopters last night that use infrared cameras. They’ve got drones up,” Winter said. “They’ve enlisted the help of the Customs and Border Protection — obviously, not too far from the border there in Mexico. They have some special resources. The FBI is also aware of this case… given the nature of what was found at the scene. That’s what has got them so concerned.”
Nancy didn’t have any reported health concerns like dementia or Alzheimer’s and had a “good sound mind.” However, officials were concerned about her physical health, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said. “She has some physical ailments that limit her ability to move around,” Nanos revealed.
Nanos also said that homicide detectives were involved in the case, even though they’re usually not called in. He cited the scene at her house caused “grave concern.” “This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we located just looking at the scene,” Nanos said.
Nanos did not go into further detail about what was at the scene. “I don’t need to tell you, this is very concerning to us; we don’t typically get the sheriff out on a scene like this, but it is very concerning,” Nanos said. “We hope we find her safe and sound, but we are very concerned.”
The Today anchor often brought Nancy as a guest on the show and talked about her love for her mother in 2022. “She loves us, her family, fiercely, and her selflessness and sacrifice for us, her steadfastness and her unmovable confidence is the reason any of us grew up to do anything,” Guthrie said in honor of her 80th birthday.
While the Today hosts reported on the news, Savannah made a statement in her absence. “I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” she began. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”
“We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone, anyone with information, to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Office at 520-351-4900.”
