The news of the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mom—a disappearance being treated by police as an abduction at this point—has taken the internet by storm, and has left people worried about the safety of Guthrie and the rest of the Today show crew. With very little in the way of information about how Nancy Guthrie was taken, and what exactly happened, there’s not much for people to do but pray and be vigilant.
And Rob Shuter is reporting that everyone’s taking this seriously, with security significantly increased around Savannah Guthrie, her family, and multiple Today hosts at this time.
“This is not routine,” one senior network insider told Shuter. “NBC security has been in active talks with law enforcement all day. This is being treated with extreme caution.”
Additional private security has also been put in place at studios, residences and during travel. This doesn’t just apply to Guthrie, but also to other on-air talent. “When something like this happens, you widen the circle,” a source explained. “You don’t assume anything — you prepare for everything.”
“Everyone is shaken,” another insider said. “Savannah is devastated, but she’s also being protected. The network is fully behind her.”
NBC executives aren’t responding to any particular threats against Guthrie at this point; they’re just being cautious. “This isn’t panic,” a source explained. “It’s responsibility. Better to be safe than sorry.” Especially as, “This has rattled people,” an NBC veteran admitted. “It hits close to home — literally.”
And it will all, of course, affect NBC’s Olympic coverage. “There is no universe where Savannah gets on a plane to Italy right now,” one senior NBC source told Shuter. “She’s devastated. Family comes first. Period.” Guthrie was scheduled to co-host the Opening Ceremony in Milan alongside Terry Gannon.
However, reports indicate no one’s expecting Guthrie to drop everything and prioritize a broadcast. Instead, there’s understanding. “There’s zero pressure on her,” a colleague said. “The message is simple: take care of your mom. We’ll handle the rest.”
On Monday, the Today Show opened with a statement from Guthrie, who is now in Arizona with her family. “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” the statement said. It also urged anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.
“We believe in prayer. We believe in voices raised in unison, in love, in hope. we believe in goodness. we believe in humanity. Above all, we believe in Him,” Guthrie wrote on Instagram on Monday alongside a picture that read Please Pray. “Thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy, a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant. raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment.”
“We need you,” she continued. “He will keep in perfect peace those whose hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. A verse of Isaiah for all time for all of us. Bring her home.”
