It’s sometimes hard to remember that people we’ve always seen together were not always so. Joe and Jill Biden have been married for so long that people almost forget that they were both married to other people before they were married to each other. Though Joe Biden’s story is more well-known, he lost his first wife and daughter in an accident; Jill Biden was also married before.

That’s right, Jill Biden married businessman William Stevenson in 1970 when she was only 18 and divorced him in 1975. She married former President Joe Biden two years later. Now, Biden’s former husband, Stevenson, is in the news many years after the divorce, and the circumstances are horrible.

Stevenson, 77, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder following the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson. Linda was found dead inside the couple’s house in Wilmington, Delaware, following an alleged domestic dispute on December 28, 2025.

New Castle County Police arrived at the couple’s home around 11:15 p.m. on the date to find Linda unresponsive in the living room. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Linda was found unresponsive in the living room when officers arrived, and they began administering life-saving measures. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Linda was 64 years old. Fox 29 News reported that Stevenson was arrested on February 2 and is being held at the Howard Young Correctional Center.

Linda’s obituary made no mention of Stevenson. Instead, it states that she was survived by her daughter, granddaughter, sister, nephew, and other “extended relatives” without mentioning her husband. It also doesn’t mention her cause of death, just states that she passed away unexpectedly on December 29, 2025.

“Linda was deeply family-oriented and treasured time spent making memories, especially on family vacations with her daughter and granddaughter,” the obituary also reads.

Stevenson had claimed, back in the day, that Jill was having an affair with Joe Biden when they separated in 1974. He told local outlet WDEL when Biden was running for President, “I said, ‘Look, the Bidens made up this dramatic story that they met, he saw a picture of her,’ and I told him, I said, ‘That was so untrue,'” throwing doubt at the timeline of the Biden’s first meeting, which they have always said was in 1975. “There’s probably 500 people in Delaware that saw Joe Biden and Jill at three major fundraising events at The Stone Balloon in 1972, after The Stone Balloon opened in February.”

Then, Stevenson said, “One thing I do not want to do, and I know this might sound funny to people, is that I don’t want to hurt her chances of becoming first lady of the United States – that’s not my goal,” Bill continued. “I would say to Jill, ‘Listen, you know how I feel about this. You had an affair. You worked on the campaign.'”

“These claims are fictitious, seemingly to sell and promote a book,” a spokesperson for the Bidens said at the time. “The relationship of Joe and Jill Biden is well documented.”

“Jill Biden separated from her first husband irreconcilably in the fall of 1974 and moved out of their marital home,” the statement continued. “Joe and Jill Biden had their first date in March of 1975, and they married in June of 1977.”

Ironically, Stevenson also told The Daily Mail in 2020, “If it wasn’t for my divorce, I would never have met my wife Linda, and she’s the greatest thing in my life.”
