Police are still trying to piece together what happened to Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie. She was first reported missing on Sunday, February 1, with the sheriff confirming not much later that she was kidnapped from her home and they were treating the investigation not as a missing person’s case, but as a crime. But what exactly happened?
Savannah Guthrie’s sister Annie had dinner with their mother shortly before her suspected abduction, which has given police a timeframe to go on from, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed to Us Weekly. “We have a start point,” Nanos said. “The family took her home from dinner at about 9:30 to 9:45. So we would back that up to even say 9 or 8:30 p.m. to start looking.”

Annie Guthrie reportedly didn’t feel there were any “red flags” in her mother’s behavior that night, and she was the last person to see her. The family was informed she was missing around 11 a.m. the next day, when she didn’t show up for church. So police are placing the time of her disappearance at “anywhere from 9:30 p.m. to 11 [a.m.]”
“This is an 84-year-old lady who is safe in her own home asleep, and she is taken. That should never happen,” Nanos said to the outlet.
Some rumors that Annie’s husband, Tomasso Cioni, was a suspect in the disappearance had surfaced, but police were quick to shut those down. On Feb. 4, 2026, Annie and Tommaso were spotted for the first time since the dissapearance, driving in their car, per photos from Page Six.
“At this point, investigators have not identified a suspect or person of interest in this case. Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie,” Nanos said in a statement on Wednesday. “Detectives are working closely with the Guthrie family. While we appreciate the public’s concern, the sharing of unverified accusations or false information is irresponsible and does not assist the investigation. No suspect or person of interest has been identified at this time.”
On Tuesday, the sheriff confirmed that that investigators have been looking into an alleged ransom note sent to a local Arizona news station on Monday. “It’s like any piece of evidence,” Nanos said. “You give it to us, you give us a lead, we’re going to look at every aspect of that lead.”
NBC News’ Tom Winter confirmed that FBI is now involved in the search, saying in a press conference that that was “concerning evidence” that led to homicide investigators becoming involved. “This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found and located just in looking at the scene,” he said. “We hope we find her safe and sound, but we are very concerned.”
Savannah Guthrie has been absent from the Today show since February 2, and released a statement about her mother’s disappearance: “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”
Guthrie also posted on Instagram on Monday alongside a picture that read Please Pray. “thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy, a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant. raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment.”
