Moving on after a long-term relationship is always complicated. Particularly if you have kids. There are so many considerations to take into account, including your ex and whatever potential partner they might have. It might just be even more complicated when your ex is the former PM of Canada, and he’s now dating Katy Perry.
That’s the situation Sophie Grégoire finds herself in. But has Justin Trudeau’s ex-wife moved on with her life, too? According to a newsletter she sent ahead of Valentine’s Day, the answer is no. Gregoire was married to Trudeau for 18 years before they separated in August 2023. They share three children, Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien.

In the newsletter, Grégoire admitted there were challenges to being “uncoupled at 50” and mentioned that Valentine’s Day was “especially loud” for those navigating “midlife singlehood.” But she also said that though it doesn’t “feel amazing” it can be a moment of “recalibration.”
“For millions of women (and men!) the answer hasn’t always been simple. We’ve been taught — sometimes gently, sometimes harshly — that our bodies, our emotions, our authenticityneed adjusting to be accepted,” she said. “When we spend years reshaping ourselves to fit in, our nervous system learns vigilance instead of ease.”
“In many ways, self-love is being aware of our defence mechanisms and adaptive behaviours,” she added. “It’s about unlearning them and choosing to change some of our emotional habits. Self-love is a practice.”
Grégoire recently spoke about her ex’s new romance and how she was adjusting to the attention it brought her on the podcast “Arlene is Alone,” saying, “You know, we’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal,” adding, “How you react to stuff is your decision. So, I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise.”
She also addressed the public nature of the relationship, explaining that she’s “very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers.” But, “what I do with it is my decision. The woman I want to become through this is my decision.
However, just like in the newsletter, she also stressed the importance of feeling and expressing her feelings, no matter what. “I’ll let myself be disappointed by someone, I’ll let myself be angry, be sad,” she explained. “And I know for a fact how important it is, as a mental health advocate, to feel those emotions.”
In that same podcast she also spoke about co-parenting with Trudeau. “I’m definitely not a single mom,” she said. “I have a partnership with a father who has such deep love and availability to his children.”
All of this comes after recent reports that things between Perry and Trudeau are getting serious. According to Heat World UK, “Katy’s ready to go all in right now with him. They’re even talking about having a child together. Justin is very clear that he wants to build a life with her and there’s no one he’d rather be with. When Katy first started seeing Justin, everyone assumed it would just be rebound fling, but it’s much more than that. She says it feels like destiny that they met.”
