The news surrounding the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie, has been devastating. Every new detail about the case has been more gut-wrenching than the last, and with each passing moment without any real leads, the concern about Nancy Guthrie’s well-being grows. And the Guthrie family is reportedly feeling the same as well.
Gossip columnist Rob Shuter is reporting that the Guthrie family—Savannah and her siblings—are growing concerned about the sheriff investigating their mother’s disappearance. Sheriff Chris Nanos, a Democrat who has been repeatedly reelected as sheriff and who is of Greek descent, has never faced such a high-profile case as this one.

“He seems more focused on the cameras than the case,” one source told Shuter. “It feels like he’s putting on a show—almost like he’s trying to impress Savannah.”
Nanos has been repeatedly emotional on camera, something some have taken as genuine, but others criticize as forced. “This isn’t about his feelings,” one source said. “Just do your job.”
Nanos has also appeared on multiple TV shows, which some indicate is just him trying to take advantage of the attention to make sure his message is out there, but others have interpreted it as him setting the stage for future opportunities. “That kind of self-promotion during an active investigation is not going over well,” a source said.
And with Nancy Guthrie still missing, Shuter indicates frustration is setting in. “The family is losing faith in him,” a source close to the family said. “They want answers, not performances.”
Police have given very few updates about leads, other than they received a ransom demand that came from an impersonator, and that person has been arrested. There was a second ransom note that reportedly demanded $6 million dollars with a deadline of Monday, February 9. The family indicated on a video posted on social media that they would pay this ransom. “We beg you now to return our mother to us — so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace,” that video also said.
Investigators believe Nancy Guthrie is still alive. “We have nothing else to go on but the belief that she is here,” Pima County Sheriff Nanos said in an interview that aired live on the Today show on Wednesday, Feb. 4. “She’s present. She’s alive, and we want to save her.”
Nancy Guthrie and her late husband Charles shared three kids: Savannah, Annie, and Camron. Savannah Guthrie has been absent from the Today show since February 2. She and her siblings have posted multiple videos on Instagram, pleading with their mother’s potential abductors.
In one of those videos, Savannah pointed out her mother’s health as she pleaded for her safe return. “She is 84 years old,” she said. “Her health, her heart is fragile. She lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive. She needs it not to suffer.”
There have been no further updates about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
