Every day, more details about the investigation into what happened to Savannah Guthrie’s mom have been released. Nancy Guthrie was kidnapped from her house somewhere between the night of January 31 and the morning of February 1st, when her family reported her missing. And though there have been updates since, it seems like only now are we getting closer to finding out what happened.
Police even detained a man for questioning about the kidnapping, though that man has now been released, according to multiple outlets. The man, identified only as a 36-year-old named Carlos, told the New York Times he was in his car on Tuesday in Rio Rico, Arizona, when police officers approached him and then detained him. He was detained for several hours and then released.

“I hope they get the suspect, because I’m not it,” he said in an interview. “They better do their job and find the suspect that did it so that they can clear my name.”
TMZ reported that law enforcement believes the kidnapper is from the Tucson area and wrote the ransom note that was sent to a couple of Tucson TV stations and TMZ. In the note, the kidnapper promised to return Nancy Guthrie within 12 hours of receiving the ransom, which has been set at 6 million.
The arrest came after the first real break in the case, when the FBI obtained and then released surveillance photos and video of a potential subject. The footage was obtained via Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell and security cameras. In the footage, the suspect is seen wearing a ski mask, jacket, and gloves, and carrying a weapon.
“Earlier today, Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies detained a subject during a traffic stop south of Tucson,” the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday night in a statement released on X. “The subject is currently being questioned in connection to the Nancy Guthrie investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the statement read.
All of this comes after rumors that Annie’s husband, Tomasso Cioni, was a suspect in the investigation had surfaced in the first few days after Guthrie’s disappearance. Police addressed the matter quickly, however.
“At this point, investigators have not identified a suspect or person of interest in this case. Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie,” Nanos said in a statement last Wednesday, February 4. “Detectives are working closely with the Guthrie family. While we appreciate the public’s concern, the sharing of unverified accusations or false information is irresponsible and does not assist the investigation. No suspect or person of interest has been identified at this time.”
Nancy Guthrie and her late husband Charles shared three kids: Savannah, Annie, and Camron. Savannah Guthrie has been absent from the Today show since February 2. She and her siblings have posted several videos on Instagram, pleading for their mother’s safe return.
On a video posted on Saturday, February 7, the siblings said they would pay the ransom. “We received your message and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us and we will pay.”
