The truth is that the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mom is bound to change things at NBC and Today going forward. For now, Guthrie has been absent from her job and was not part of the Winter Olympics coverage, as she was expected to be. And while police are still investigating what happened to her mom and hoping to find her still alive, the network and show are scrambling to figure out what comes next.

Will Guthrie return to the Today show? What is NBC saying and thinking behind the scenes? Here’s what we know.

Reports indicate that Savannah Guthrie is considering stepping down from her job, not just while the investigation into her mother’s disappearance is active, but for good. “This absolutely came out of the blue, and I think she’s really concerned that it was because of her job,” Paula Froelich, NewsNation senior story editor, told NewsNation Prime.

That includes the anchor wondering if her mother’s appearances on the Today show made her too visible and too vulnerable.

Rob Shuter is reporting that there are conversations about how much access is too much access in the wake of Nancy’s disappearance. Nancy Guthrie last appeared on the Today show in November 2025, in a segment filmed in Tucson. Now, other family-focused segments have been scrapped. No confirmation of what they were, but they likely affect Today’s other co-anchors, Craig Melvin, Al Roker and Carson Daily.

“There were at least three family tie-ins pulled this week,” one senior morning producer revealed. “It suddenly feels different.”

It’s not just at NBC, either. ABC and CBS have also paused pieces focusing on the family of their anchors. “No one wants to blur the line between storytelling and exposure right now,” a source said. And even cable news has gotten the memo. “It’s an industry-wide recalibration,” a media executive explained. “When real life becomes frightening, the ‘we’re one big family’ model feels riskier.”

So, whatever morning shows and even news in general looks like going forward, it likely won’t be the same. “This is a wake-up call,” a source added. “The human touch isn’t going away — but the access might.”

Nancy Guthrie was kidnapped from her house somewhere between the night of January 31 and the morning of February 1. She and her late husband Charles shared three kids: Savannah, Annie, and Camron. The three have been active on social media since Nancy first disappeared, sending messages to her and pleading with her captors.

The FBI has increased the reward for information on Nancy Guthrie. “Today, the FBI is increasing its reward up to $100,000 for information leading to the location of Nancy Guthrie and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance,” read a statement shared by FBI Phoenix via social media on Thursday. “New identifying details about the suspect in the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie have been confirmed after a forensic analysis of the doorbell camera footage by the FBI’s Operational Technology Division.”
